The prosecution rested its case Wednesday afternoon in the first trial in Nebraska to allow cameras in the courtroom. Richard Griswold is charged in Beatrice with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend last November.
Kent Weber with the Nebraska State Patrol's Crime Lab demonstrated the .22-caliber revolver allegedly used in the shooting.
Beatrice Police Officer Cheryl Honea also talked about what the 43-year-old Griswold said in the ambulance on his way to a Lincoln hospital after the shooting.
“He was asked, did he want to kill himself and take Connie with him. He said he didn't want to take Connie with him. He was then asked if he remembered shooting her. He said he didn't really remember shooting her and then he said, I shot her in the head."
Griswold doesn't contest that he shot 49-year-old Connie Eacret at her home in Beatrice, but Griswold's attorney has tried to convince jurors that Griswold is guilty only of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
One of the witnesses testified that Eacret may have been trying to stop Griswold from shooting himself when she was shot. Griswold had been drinking and taking tranquilizers that night.
Closing arguments are scheduled for Thursday morning.
