After months of delay, an abandoned Omaha trailer court is being cleaned up to make way for redevelopment.

Crews are tearing down and hauling away the debris left behind along Center Street between 65th and 67th.

Sam Amato's restaurant has been caught in the middle of new construction and demolition of the trailer court. Amato has been in the restaurant business for close to 40 years and he's seen a lot of change in the area during that time.

“Like any small business, you adapt or you go under. We've learned to adapt, we just keep hanging in here with the roads that have been blocked off. That’s okay, you get the good side, you've got workers who have tremendous appetites and they're very loyal to us."

The University of Nebraska Foundation owns the land and after it's all cleaned up, it plans to develop the land into condos, shops and businesses.

“I think overall with the finished product with that being cleaned up and the other project is done, it’s gonna be a great asset, not only to our business but also to the area," says Amato.

Workers believe they will have the old trailer court cleaned up in a few days.

I agree it was a mess, but what is the city/state going to do? Fine itself?

Glad to see this being done. I drove by this area for the first time in a long time and was impressed with all the changes to that stretch of Center. Really, that whole Aksarben area will be so nice....anyone know when the Walmart on 72nd opens - hope its one of the nicer ones, not like the one on N. 99th.

I think there should be some sort of reprimand for the inspector who let this go on for so long.do your job that us taxpayers pay YOU.

Whether the city or land owner is responsible, it's about time. The city can toot it's own horn for tourism or conventions, but what kind of message do abandoned buildings and property send? If I saw that, I'd say it was a city that didn't care. If the property owner is responsible, get after them to take care of it.

Glad to see it's finally being taken care of. That was an eye sore that should have been taken care of months ago.

Next time the inspector looks things over, and sez you better cleanup this mess or pay a fine. Tell them to follow their own orders. This mess should not have gone this long. Is some one exempt from the law.
