A 16-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition after being wounded in a drive-by shooting Tuesday night.

Jose Mendoza of Omaha told officers he was standing outside of 3410 Cass Street near Gifford Park just after 10 p.m. when a red Chevy Blazer came westbound on Cass Street. A single shot was fired from the vehicle, striking Mendoza in the leg.

Medics transported Mendoza to the Nebraska Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

    No arrests have been made.

The thing that bothers me the most is that no matter what no body sees anything... How is that possible? So it is always just 1 person there? My rear end!!!! My goodness, if these people would just start coming forward with info we could get these people off the street and maybe there would be less shootings... U CAN STAY ANONYMOUS!!! They dont tell you that you have to give your name in fact they tell you that it is best to stay anonymous!!! SO PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF THESE PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES SPEAK UP!!!!

My regards to Jose & family. We can only guess how & why he was targeted. Red Chevy Blazer, huh? Remember, CRIMINALS move around Omaha. Kooks, crazies, heartless dead-beat low-lifes & just plain violent insane mentally-ill people get out & about once in awhile TOO, to take care of business. Will they lose it & rear their ugly side walking outside, on the road, at the store or at HOME? If Omahans won't treat each other, strangers, neighbors & even their own family NICELY by doing tiny little small things that mean ALOT, love will disappear. I live close to 34th & Cass. I hear gun-shots at night weekly. Omahans: Don't let this most recent drive-by shooting manifest itself by you giving up & failing to help & render aid to those who are the most helpless & homeless. Listen to godly christian mentors who are patient & give good advice; who show & teach us how to respect & behave without guns & knives. Weapon owners get itchy fingers. Even the Police have been known to get froggy & JUMP!

Right, CM...and CASS Street is getting pretty close to Dodge. Not everything's happening up on Pratt or Lake or Ames anymore, people. Lord help us when the South O and North O gangs meet at 25th & Dodge...

No, not all shootings are North of Dodge, nor East of I-680 - but a highly disproportionate percentage of them are in that area. Nobody there ever seems to see anything, either, like Sgt. Schultz, they see nothing...

Totally agree with you Jill. The local activists wouldn't like it as the law would get tougher and everyone would scream victim - victim.

Well, Anonymous @ 1;29PM, you're right; shootings are NOT just north of Dodge. However, if 20 out of 25 ARE, then where do you think we need to concentrate our efforts? In fact, it doesn't matter where the shootings take place, it all starts at home. I think the Guardian Angels is an excellent idea and I sure hope they can get the participation they need to clean up their respective areas...wherever they might be. It isn't a Neighborhood Watch but sure acts like one and should be commended. Perfect example of residents taking action in THEIR neighborhood.

You are right, Pete. Walk the talk, parents. Set an example. Do something good for someone every day. Even if it's just opening a door with a smile.

I have a great idea. Why don't we reasearch and see what the mayor of New York (Rudy G) did to make crime statisics decline. I am sure it wasn't to just throw more and more money at the problem-but to come up with a solid plan and stick to it, including police prosacutors and Judges. may not happen overnight, but will in time make a difference.

Seriously....when does crap like this stop being "news"? It seems to happen every day. I'm becoming desensitized.

(sigh) I guess this was inevitable. Most of the news lately has been traffic-related - it was just a matter of time before another young person got shot. Hope he recovers, and hope they catch the shooter.

Wanted: Role models and mentors north of Dodge. Many openings available. Blame it on the city, blame the OPD, but these problems stem from home. Raise your children before you set them free to learn on their own. These kids were taught this behavior, and I've seen it in action over time first hand pass from one generation to the next. Guns don't solve problems, solutions do, and solutions start inside each and every home in this community.
