Pet shop owner says animal thefts now common

A little Council Bluffs girl is heartbroken after someone stole a family pet from the front yard as she played nearby.

For Cailin Snodgrass, Angel was more than just a puppy. "It made me feel happy. It made me feel like I actually had a friend.”

Last Saturday, Cailin lost a friend as Angel was taken from in front of Cailin's house as she played in her yard at 29th Street and Avenue B. "I'm devastated. I loved her so much."

Muriel Wellnitz was an eyewitness. She says a minivan pulled up and stole the dog. "A car come and stopped and called it and he picked it up and took off."

Now a family pleas for help. "Just please, please return it. I just really love her and miss her.”

Any dog left out in the yard is an invitation to a criminal who may see your pet as a financial opportunity. An invitation that got Channel 6 News Crimetracker wondering how often this crime occurs in your neighborhood.

An animal theft is listed simply as a theft like any other form of property, so no specific data is available. The Nebraska Humane Society is not seeing any trends.

Rex Maresch owns The Bird Cage pet shop where Cailin bought her Chihuahua. "We've had a large increase in theft.” Maresch says recently thieves have tried stealing everything from puppies to ferrets. Last week, one thief tried to stuff an iguana down his pants.

Maresch says he knows why it's happening. "It really hurts. We raise these pets. We want them to be pets and companions, we don't like to see these pets just thrown away or sold for drugs."

Cailin's had no luck in finding Angel, but she says she believes in guardian angels. She just hopes her Angel has one, too.

Hours after the puppy was stolen, the family learned that just blocks away someone was selling puppies out of a box for $25. One person said they believe Angel was one of them.

Anyone with information should contact Council Bluffs Police.

It's truly disgusting. People shouldn't steal ANYTHING from others, but the little girl's dog? It just goes to show that people who do not own pets see them as objects, while people that do own pets see them as part of the family. Nonetheless, what a sick individual. It's sad that she will probably never see her puppy again, and even though it wouldn't be the same, I'd gladly donate some money to that little girl so that she chould get another puppy.

How pathetic. Taking a dog from a little girl. Get a job.

Absolutely heartless!!! I hope the new owners hear about this story & make sure Angel gets back to Cailin. I would be devastated if anyone stole my dog. I'll pray for you Cailin and anyone else who has lost their family friend.

LOW LIFE SCUM BAG that stole the little puppy from this child.

Puppy thief - YOU ARE A SCUMBAG!

Doubtful that the thief will read this but I'll gladly give him $50 to return Angel to Calin unharmed & no questions asked (at least not by me). It is painfully apparent just how much that little girl loves her friend and it is truely sad that she has to suffer this way.

I'd like to catch someone trying to steal my dogs. Guess their just going to have to see what I'd do. To steal someone's pet they aren't worth the air honest people breathe.

Was Angel microchipped? If one of the puppies for sale was believed to be Angel, a simple scan by the Humane Society will give a quick answer. And anyone who would steal a puppy from a little girl is pathetic. I hope Angel bites them on the hand.

Huh? "Hard economic times"? Bravo Sierra! More like lazy people that want easy money. Go get a manual labor job, instead of stealing from others.

Anyone who would steal a puppy from a little girl to buy a hit of crack or meth had better pay dearly for it in the afterlife. And Jennifer, these scum can't get jobs because they'd never pass a drug test, let alone ever even show UP for work.

This is disgusting. Just another act of no respect. No respect for the little girl and her and her families property and the individuals who stole the dog has no respect for themselves. People like this disgust me! I know the world isn't going to be perfect but if a few more people knew right from wrong as many of us are taught when we are young then just maybe we wouldn't have so many fights and guns. This poor little thing. My heart goes out to her!

I feel so sorry for Cailin, and I hope they find Angel soon. This is one of the many reasons why I always keep my puppy on a leash when he's outside (aside from the fact that it's the law where I live - it's a law which makes sense and to which I will gladly adhere). Don't know who the bigger idiot would be - someone selling puppies out of a box, or someone that would buy a puppy from someone selling puppies out of a box.

Are there more pictures of the puppy that can be published? It may not be possible to get the vermin that did this, but if Angel was sold, I'd bet a good dollar that the buyer would recognize her picture and bring her home.

Somehow, I don't see any thief heartless enough to steal a puppy from a little girl responding to this appeal. Perhaps they should buy Angel back for $25 and then have the evidence to have the thieves arrested? Not that they should HAVE to do so, but it does get the dog back. I'm sorry that this happened to Cailin.

This is a sad result of desperation in hard economic times. There are evil people out there who will stop at nothing to get money. The upcoming "Hollywood Chihuahua" will not help Chihuahua owners--more dogs will be stolen, and more puppy farms will spring up as demand for dogs increases.

Happens all the time in South O. You can see the flyers for missing dogs (and people) on light poles all over South Omaha.

People and sick and they should be locked up forever no matter how little or big the crime. Let's work together to rid the world of useless people. That is a horrible feeling to have your pet taken from you. They are more than just an animal, they are part of the family. Give the little girl her dog back! Do the right thing for once.

This is just sickening!!!! It reminds me of a book I read in Junior High. "The Giver" by Lowis Lowry. Telling of a community of sameness, no color, no cars, everything in their life planned out by rules, no race, just gender. I'm almost at a point where that is a world i would rather live in than the one we are in today. Stealing a puppy!?!?!? Someones best friend, and something someone actually WORKED FOR, for them to sell for whatever reason. There is a solution to your money troubles...it's called GET A JOB!!!

I'm sorry to hear this happen. Has the police been involved and if so i hope they checked out that person selling the puppy's. This person doing this should go to jail for a long time. This is just sick to hear about this and i'm sure this person needed a fix what a loser steal a dog sell it for money and use the money on a fix. your day of reckining is comming whoever you are and be scared be very scared.

This is sad. What kind of world are we living in that you can not even have a puppy for your children?! I hope that the little girl gets her companion returned unharmed..
