A teenager drowned Sunday afternoon in the Missouri River along the Nebraska-South Dakota border.

The Clay County Sheriff's Department says the body of 19-year-old Richard Darrell of Maskell, Nebraska was recovered about 3:30 p.m. downstream from the Vermillion-Newcastle bridge.

Witnesses told deputies that Darrell was wading along a sandbar with a group of people when Darrell and his 7-year-old brother fell into a deep dropoff in the water and began to struggle.

Authorities say Darrell pushed his brother to safety onto the bank, but continued to struggle himself and went under the water.

Ricky was a good man, a good friend, and did what a hero would do. He loved his brother.

I am Rickys cousin and he was a great person who would help anyone. He showed us his true colors by saving his brother, he is a hero.

I read this story yesterday and it has been on my mind ever since. What an incredible story of personal sacrifice - I have faith that this young man is now in the hall of heroes in heaven. The family will be in my prayers, especially the surviving brother. To Bruce: Your callous, insolent, and utterly thoughtless remark is appalling. Clearly the virtue of heroism is lost on you, as well as any sense of respect for humanity. May something similar never befall you lest someone flippantly make a similar quip about your own loss.

Ricky was one of my really good friends. Thank you to everyone who is extending sympathy. And to bruce, everyone swims in rivers not just teenagers. Anyone who goes camping goes into the river and swims, or fishes, or just sits on the sand bars. Shame on you for being so narrow minded. I love you ricky, i will always remember you! we may lose the ones we love, but we never lose the memory. That is what we will always cherish. You will be remembered as a brother, a friend, a marine, and son. We love you!

I am so sorry for what has happened to this family. I sincerely hope that the brother who survived will not be plagued by feelings of guilt the rest of his life. We should celebrate that Darrell is a hero and be sensitive to the needs of those who are left.

To Bruce: Read the story again. They were on a sandbar when they fell into a deep section of the river. At least Darrell saved his brother. In my opinion he's a hero for saving his brother while sacrificing his own life. Any body could have made that mistake of getting into deeper water but would they be smart enough to save their brother?

Ricky wasn't swimming in the river. I fully agree any river is dangerous
