    A student athlete at a Lincoln high school has died after collapsing during football practice.

    The Lincoln Journal Star reports that 17-year-old John Liescheski finished running a 30-yard sprint during Thursday's spring practice and collapsed. He was taken to BryanLGH Medical Center East, where he died.

    Liescheski was a junior at Pius X High School.

    Thanks to all from outside the Pius Family who have reached out to us. Our children are helped by your prayers as they coop with the loss of their classmate, team mate & friend. After the shock it's difficult as the world goes on while you are stuck morning your loss. Thanks for the support. For those who blame the coaches...this could have happened while John was out running in a park or playing football on Saturday in the park with friends as he often did. Please remember that the coaches are hurting too.

    thats sad the coach shouldnt of made them run. ive had 3 ashma attcks last yr becsue the treacher made me run they wernt servie but i had medicen with me

    LongQT- I agree with you completely. Any precaution available for just in case situations would be okay with me. The poor family. My heart goes out to them for their loss.

    No matter if it's violence, drinking & driving or just a pure accident...NO PARENT SHOULD EVER HAVE TO BURY THEIR OWN CHILD ! ! ! May God be with you.

    My 15 year old daughter went into cardiac arrest in September. By the grace of god and the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire/Rescue squad, she survived. She suffers from a hereditary condition called Long QT Syndrome, basically the heart takes to long to recharge for its next beat and fails to keep beating resulting in cardiac arrest. There have been too many of our kids dying while involved in sports related episodes. This condition is only detectable through a stress test which is not a regular part of a sport physical so it often goes unnoticed. We as parents need to demand that defibrillators be on the sidelines during all sporting events and practices. There is a 5 minute window after a person goes into cardiac arrest before irreversible damage will occur. The national average response time for rescue squads to arrive on scene is 15 minutes, 10 minutes too late.
