City says with walkway, light no longer needed

A stoplight put up for safety years ago in the Benson neighborhood is apparently doing more harm than good and will be removed, although residents want it to stay put.

The traffic signal was installed at 66th and Maple as a result of a fatal pedestrian accident outside Benson West Elementary School. A pedestrian walkway over Maple Street was later installed.

The light will have to come down anyway to put in wheelchair ramps at the curb. Reinstalling the lights would cost up to $60,000 more.

“The signal is not warranted,” says city traffic engineer Todd Pfitzer. “It's not warranted based on pedestrian volumes, vehicular volumes, delays, accidents. In fact, it's possible that it's contributing to accidents."

"Nobody's child, especially as fast as these people drive down the street not obeying the speed limit, there's no reason why a child’s life should be put at risk just to save a few dollars," says parent Stephanie Benton.

Some parents and neighbors insist the light is still necessary even with the walkway above. They call the light "an added safety measure.”

The light has been set to flash for now. It's scheduled to soon be turned off.

"The light will have to come down anyway to put in wheelchair ramps at the curb." Apparently, we expect people in wheelchairs will be able to cross that intersection without the help of a light. Who are we trying to kid?

THERE ARE ALREADY WHEELCHAIR RAMPS AT THIS INTERSECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well here is one more decision made by someone that lives in WEST Omaha and apparently doesn't actually stop to link about the aftermath this will cause. I would like to see the accident reports on all of these rear end accidents they are talking about. People are still going to be stopped at that intersection to turn, do you think removing the lights is going to curb that? People just need to slow down through there. It is a school zone!!!!!!! Pull your heads out and think about this before you remove these lights. It's not a matter of IF an accident occurs once the lights are removed but WHEN.....is Todd Pfitzer willing to answer to the poor family that loses a loved one?

Are you kidding!! This light is very important. Leaving the area after picking up your child is a joke without this light. Thanks Omaha for thinking of the safety of my child and many other children in this area! I see where this city's priorities are. Spend the money to put in ramps that won't be used because there will be no light in use which would allow the wheel chairs to utilize them. Maybe the city should start checking IQ's before hiring!!!

I grew up in that neighborhood long before that light was installed and cannot tell you how many scary moments I had trying to pull out onto Maple Street from 66th. Cars fly over that hill from the West and there definitely needs to be stoplights there. Please, Mr. Suttle and others, help us out -- we need this stoplight.

There are students who cross 66th Street and there is not a overpass there. With cars trying to cross Maple or turn onto Maple from 66th Street, this is an accident waiting to happen. Plus, is the city going to make sure the bushes are trimmed on the south side of Maple so the drivers in the vehicles can see Maple Street clearly?

I cant wait till I get enough money to leave this stupid city with their stupid ideas

Posted by: Jamie Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 01:56 PM
The other thing that drives me crazy about that intersection is how drivers decide it's 2 lanes going westbound beginning at that light even though there aren't painted lines indicating such. Between taking out that stop light and driver stupidity at that particular intersection, someone else is definitely going to get hurt.

Ok if they remove this set of lights , what about parents picking up and droping off kids from school and getting back across Maple >I know I am one of those parents ! And what about the school busses and the city buss that turns off 66th and goes east on Maple. I can not see that buss turning in front of traffic coming over the hill and makinng it in time . They drive crazy east on Maple and WHO will be held responsable when some one does get hit by a car on Maple street .. And to think some one gets paid big money to come up with these ideas... and whats $60,000 to replace them when the are putting how much into a bridge across the river ??? Thanks for reading my point of view! ! ! !

I think Mr. Pfitzer needs to spend a day just observing traffic along this stretch of road, not just a few minutes/hours. People drive like maniacs and no traffic light from 72nd to 63rd will just give them more reason to speed up. Please reconsider, there has to be a better way.

I live in the nieghborhood. This is a ridiculous move by the city. The children still have to cross the busy intersection to get to the walk bridge. Also, that is the one intersection in the area with lights that allow drivers to get onto Maple Street safely. The city needs to make the sidewalks handicap accessible anyway. What is the issue? Another case where money comes before safety.

Why couldn't the light stay operational during school hours? It could flash at all other times.

I think Omaha has WAAAAYY to many lights. Everytime i drive down to creighton i go through this mess of lights that really isnt needed. The city also needs to look downtown as there are wastefull lights down there too. Maple street seems to be flooded with lights that arent needed and then there are intersections where a light needs to be but the city instead puts them at low traffic intersections like 16th and douglas. And the people from the nursing homes, well most of them should have there license revoked as there poor drivers anyways.

Apologies to the earlier commenters, BUT... I have been stopped at this light for absolutely no reason too many times. It is not needed. Now if Omaha could just maybe time the rest of the lights in this city........

I used to live in Benson. It is no secret that there is alot of pedestrian traffic in this area. I have on a number of occasions witnessed elderly people crossing at this intersection that can barely make it with the light. They are not able to use the crosswalk. What will happen now when a car comes flying over the hill?

Trying to get out of one of the business on that corner when the light was green was very difficult. Sometimes, that was the only way to get out... wait for the light to turn red. Even than it was sometimes difficult.

Posted by: Amy Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 08:12 AM
Yeeeeeeaaah...Try pulling around the corner of 66th street onto Maple in a school bus at any time of day, light or no light. Tnx, You just made my job a little more challenging.

Posted by: Crossing Maple Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 08:12 AM
There is so much traffic on Maple street at 5:15pm when I get to that intersection. It is very hard to cross Maple or make a left turn due to the amount of traffic. With the number of cars going east and west on Maple, there isn't much of a chance to safely make a left or cross Maple.

Posted by: Fred Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 08:11 AM
Wait till someone comes over the hill from the West and slams into a car trying to cross Maple at 66th Street or coming out of the Nursing home at 66th Ave. It will take someone else getting killer to get the light back up.

Posted by: RM Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 01:01 AM
Because drivers wont obey traffic laws it's the lights fault that there are accidents. The light also helps traffic from the neighborhood get onto Maple without having to run a gauntlet of speeding cars.
