Drivers are supposed to know the basic rules of the road and recognize posted signs. Some are ignoring the detour signs, orange roadblocks and construction workers along Harrison Street.

Harrison Street between 60th and 72nd is visibly under construction and is closed at just about every end. That makes getting to a soccer field in La Vista a bit of a challenge.

"It's just a long trip,” says Katie Laughhunn of Omaha. “I travel down there every day to work for soccer, for T-ball, everything, so it's kind of a hassle to go around. It takes me extra time every day, but in the end it will be worth it."

The project is an upgrade for Harrison, adding a third lane so drivers can turn without holding up traffic. There are warning signs at just about every intersection, telling drivers, not this way, the road is closed.

Near 72nd and Harrison, roadblock barricades seem to be doing the job, stopping traffic from flowing eastbound, but westbound it's a totally different story.

“What the violators are telling us is that they were following these trucks or they were just simply following other vehicles thinking that it was okay to come through,” says La Vista Police Sgt. Bryan Waugh.

Once they got to 66th and Harrison, police were waiting. "It's our concern that not only are the violators, obviously violating a road closed sign, but it's up for their protection and it's up for the protection of the construction workers and also at a minimum they could result in damage to their own vehicle."

The damage could be caused by rolling over any debris that lies in the road. To keep everyone safe, police are hoping their up close and personal warnings will get the message out.

"We've had officers go from verbal warnings, written warnings, all the way up to traffic citations," says Sgt. Waugh. A ticket could cost up to $70. Police say it's not as if drivers were never warned.

The construction project is being completed in phases. The area between Harrison from 72nd to 60th will remain closed until sometime in November. The second phase of construction, scheduled to begin in the spring of 2009, will close off Harrison Street from 48th to 58th.

4 min trips taking 45 min from 69th st to go to 49th and harrison...you cannot tell me they cant make a temporary vain thru there some how...its nuts especially in this time of gas prices...please!

People are stupid. They are disrespectful, in a hurry and always on their cell phones. Thet cut people off and don't obey any of the signs, I am not surprised!

Posted by: Mel on May 15, 2008 at 09:04 PM
why were these people given warnings? They should have been ticketed. Gather a little more revenue for the city and teach them a lesson. One thing I've noticed about this city is that many drivers really don't care about other drivers. Here in Bellevue I watch day after day as people run the red light at the Walmart intersection - sometimes 4-5 at a time. All that matters is that they get where they are going and not have to wait.

Drivers DO NOT know the basic rules of the road. Most people read the driver's handbook in order to pass the test, not to learn the rules of the road. If that isn't true why does EVERYONE go at least 10 miles over the posted speed limit even in school zones. Why do people run red lights every day and turn left in front of oncoming traffic without having the right-of-way. Too many drivers disregarding the posted signs. Fines don't seem to matter. I say, take all of the road signs down and sell the metal and use the money to hire more police to make our streets safe from idiot drivers.

    great idea Lori!!!!

People know what it means, they are probably just tired of finding a new way to get home. When a simple road project take 1-3 years to complete, its no wonder people dont give a crap. They can have a wal mart up and running in 9 months to a year, but cant lay a flat road 1 mile long in less than 2 years.

Commenting on Bob. You don't care... Why? You could possibly injure a worker on the road. I think that is a big reason to care. If you hit someone you will care. It may take a couple extra minutes to go out of the way and take a little more gas for all the large SUVs that are driven. Big deal.

The piece doesn't tell you how to get to the soccer fields! If Harrison is closed from 60-72 street how do you get to Seymour Smith Field?

Posted by: Big Red on May 15, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Not suprising at all! Omaha drivers never follow the rules of the road. Anyone going the correct speed limit on there streets or interstates usually get the bird or passed by on the shoulder of the road. Everyone who drove through the road block should of been ticked and vehicle inpounded. Look at all that money the city would of made. LOL!!!!!

I don't understand why both sides of 66th are closed, last week, just going West from 66th was barricaded only, now going East is also, although they stated the work will go in phases and going to the East is last, but yet the whole street is closed off? Why???????

HL & Here - you got it exactly right. I bet there are a lot of problems with all of our many non-English speaking/reading citizens. As far as the driver's test goes - I haven't even taken one in so many years...just when I first obtained my license. Maybe people need to re-test more often as well. I know it won't solve the problem completely, everyone is in such a hurry all the time! SLOW DOWN! Nothing is worth risking your life or killing someone over.

This part of Harrison street is still better thatn most of the roads South, fix the pot holes, then start replacing roads?? More of my tax $ wasted!

Bob hit the nail on the head...the rules don't apply to him, because He's Bob and everyone knows Bob is more important than everyone else...or if they don't, they should.

People who "cut through" construction zones & detours are JUST PLAIN LAZY.....PERIOD!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Hello, Drivers that are complaining that it takes too long. Why don't you put on your grown up pants and follow the rules and set an example for you children when they are in the car? You say you just don't want to follow the detour, but if something happens to your car because of the construction then you will throw a fit and point fingers. And why? Because you don't know how to take responsibility for your actions. Follow the law and stop complaining.

they don't know what red, yellow,or green mean or that the middle lane is for turning, you don't actually expect them to read and follow those directions do you.

Posted by: TJ on May 15, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Bob just said it all; "we just don't care". Seems to be the attitude of so many people today and that attitude is being passed down to their kids. Not only are they stupid, they are LAZY.

Sad thing is that a lot of times people see these barriers up for weeks with nothing going on. Or someone will dig a hole and then the hole stays there for days with nothing else happening. Safety is always an issue and this sounds like it is obvious that there is work going on. But I can understand the frustration of dealing with summer construction.

these drivers are only following the trucks from the recycling center who seem to be able to do as they please

Posted by: Lori on May 15, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Install spike strips. I bet the violations of the detour would stop in a hurry.

Posted by: OmahaAnnie on May 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM
This is because most follow the "Rules don't apply to me" philosophy. To quote Mike Straka: Obliviots

Posted by: Timmeh on May 15, 2008 at 08:35 AM
Omahan's don't pay attention - PERIOD! When the construction was going on at 72 & Dodge, there were no left turn signs out and guess what? It didn't matter. Omahan's don't stop at stop signs, they don't stop at red lights, so why is this a surprise? It shouldn't be. The traffic laws AREN'T enforced in the city limits unless it's blatantly obvious (such as 100mph on west Dodge).

Posted by: Bob on May 15, 2008 at 08:21 AM
We know what a detour sign means. We just don't care. Harrison is not torn up between 60th and 66th streets. There is no reason we should not be able to travel to 66th street. There is nothing unsafe about the roads any more than any other weather related conditions we face in Nebraska.

To bad the LaVista Police didn't confiscate the vehicles and hand them a ticket to go along with their walk back to reality. Say $200 to get their vehicle back and another $100 for being stupid

Posted by: HL on May 15, 2008 at 06:40 AM
Why should this surprise anyone? Drivers ignore stop signs, speed limits, no parking signs and red lights, so why would this be any different?

Posted by: Here on May 15, 2008 at 05:50 AM
I wonder how many of them can't understand/read english?

All the stupid lemmings following each other!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 01:06 AM
Maybe the test to get a drivers license is too easy. Posted detours and barricades have always meant go around not through oh monkey see monkey do.

Posted by: dizzleB on May 14, 2008 at 11:42 PM
I hate to say it but drivers are more stupid these days. these people have no respest of the road and will make anyway to get where they are going. People just don't care what happens just aslong as they make it there and workers and other drivers are getting hurt or killed over the road closings. Seen many scenes where a road worker was killed because a driver didn't want to go the detour and cut through the working area ran over the worker and died from injury. So I say GOOD JOB LaVISTA POLICE OFFICERS write the tickets, tow their cars and maybe a lesson might be learned. LETS KEEP THE ROADS SAFE!!!!!!

at least Harrison is being done in phases, Hwy 31 has been torn up for a very long time. I dont understand why construction is being started in one area of 31, then all work stops and they start 3/4 a mile farther along. Why not complete a mile or two at a time?
