A UNL professor and high school soccer coach arrested in Lincoln Wednesday faces 14 felony charges in connection with an investigation of alleged child abuse, false imprisonment and sexual assault dating back eight years.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's office is investigating incidents that allegedly took place at the home of 57-year-old Sanford Kaplan at 14647 Country Lane on several occasions beginning in 2000.

Two boys, ages 13 and 15, tell authorities that they were bound, blindfolded, gagged and suspended from the rafters of a detached garage. The actions were allegedly portrayed as a game and the juveniles were told to attempt to escape the bindings.

A search warrant was served on May 6th at the Country Lane address, off Highway 77 and Raymond Road north of Lincoln. Authorities seized items used in the bindings, a home computer and a camera. Kaplan was interviewed and is currently in protective custody.

An arrest affidavit obtained by Channel 6 News reveals Kaplan admits to sexual contact with 13, 14 and 15 year old boys, suspending them for 30-45 minutes at a time. He said he videotaped at least one incident.

Kaplan is a part-time professor of geology at UNL, boys soccer coach at Lincoln Northeast High School and a youth soccer coach for various organizations including the Capital Soccer Association. He has also been a host family for foreign exchange students through the ERDT/SHARE! High School Exchange Program.

Authorities say that they have identified at least five young men who have allegedly been victimized by Kaplan. Officials say there might be other boys who were involved, some of whom would now be as old as 23.

The sheriff's department says it needs to be emphasized that not all boys who went to Kaplan’s house were subjected to these activities, but investigators say they believe there are a number of victims that have not yet been identified.

Authorities say Kaplan has no prior criminal history. They say that background checks conducted by Lincoln Public Schools and other groups would not have found any information that would lead them to believe Sanford would subject the young people he has had contact with to this type of abuse.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 441-7725.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Web site identified Kaplan as a part-time professor. That was as of Wednesday morning. The content has since been removed from the site. Click here to view an image of the page prior to the content deletion.

A university spokeswoman said Wednesday afternoon that Kaplan is no longer employed by the university.

Kaplan was the head coach of the boys soccer team at Lincoln Northeast, having just completed his third season. School officials told Channel 6 News that his contract will not be renewed.

Kaplan was also a member of the Raymond, Nebraska volunteer fire department.

He was booked into jail on two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, six counts of false imprisonment and six counts of child abuse. All 14 charges are Class IIIA felonies, each punishable by a maximum of five years imprisonment and/or a $10,000 fine.

I don't think that there are any more perverts out there now a days than there were back in the 50's 60's 70's or 80's. they are just getting caught now with more frequency. I grew up in the 70's/80's and was raped by a older man while walking home from school. Never told anyone cause I thought it was my fault. i was 11 years old and followed him in the woods cause he said he wanted to show me something really cool. Now a days, kids know better (at least some of them) and tell when it happens.

Stranger Danger Lesson #1; when a grown man wants you to play ANY kind of game, Candyland, Parchese, or "hang the kid from the garage rafters"......RUN!!!

In response to Alan about news in the 80s. I am guessing not sure but did you every think that maybe the kids back then didn't want to say anything because they were to afraid? Also the media is what it is today... Are lives are fast and the media knows it is a story that will make people comment like others and myself. I am just saying kids are afraid to say what has happened, but there are a brave few.

I'm trying to figure out why each felony is only a max of 5 years. This dude is sick.

Gross, just gross. This man is a pig and should be hog tied like one and then hung from the rafters just like he did to his victims.

This just seems to keep becoming an epidemic that is just terrible. I try to think that I understand humans, and their actions fairly well. But this type of stuff is just beyond me, I know that psychologist will have a disease to bury this under, but what makes them start thinking like that? Maybe some people are right that this has been going on for longer than most would like to admit, and now victims are confronting their preditors, which is a good thing, but I feel that sometimes is more detrimental to the victim, by the public media all over it.

I think he should stay in jail for the rest of he's life.

Posted by: J Location: Omaha on May 15, 2008 at 05:44 AM
Yeah, Alan, we don't need to know about a pervert who potentially could be abusing children. Let's just sweep it under the rug. It's morons like you that just bury your heads in the sand & think "Nebraska Values" make life just grand!

When I read the newspaper or watched the news during the 80's in Omaha, I swear I never heard a story regarding an adult accused of a sex crime. I guess the media has learned that it's good for ratings.

What is it, the water, the air what is causing all these men wanting to have sex with kids? All the time it is on either local or national news of children as young as baby being sexually assaulted, what the hell!! I look at my son and there is nothing sexually appealing about him, hes a kid not a sex toy. Why dont these guys get a clue or just shoot themselves.

To "rather not say" in Omaha, I guess the "innocent until proven guilty" went out the window when he admitted to doing it!

What about: innocent until proven guilty?
