A group of local veterans took action Sunday night after finding the American flag at Memorial Park damaged and dangling in the mud.

Viewer Terry Kempf sent us this picture of how the flag looked earlier Sunday, barely hanging on at the bottom of the pole.

The veterans removed the flag. It's unclear if the flag was damaged by vandals or by Mother Nature. "When we got here and looked at it, we're hopeful that it was the result of all the wind and the hard rain we've had the last couple of days,” said U.S. Navy veteran Robert Swanson.

The vets said they'll hand over the flag to the Parks Department Monday morning.

What about the poor flag that has been hanging in tatters at Turner Park? I believe that the park is a memorial to WWI vets, and the flag that hangs at that memorial is in rags.

I would like to thank all veterans for everything they have done for our country and continue to do. No matter what our political views are, we're able to live our lives as we see fit due to the sacrifices and actions of our veterans. We owe them everything.

One sad thing about us Americans, not only do we ask these guys to support our interests abroad, but they have to do it here, too? I am ashamed of us, and pledge to be more watchful in the future. Sorry about that, guys and gals.

Thank you to the veterans for taking the flag out of the mud. I don't care what your current opinion of the USA is, the flag is a symbol of freedom and should be respected.

If it was vandalism, catch them and give them a one way ticket to a poor nation, maybe they will come to appreciate this one.
