Shots fired at a house Saturday morning forced Omaha Police to lock down the neighborhood while searching for the shooters. No one was injured.

Shortly after the shots rang out just before 3 a.m. between 35th and 37th streets near Grand Avenue, the police helicopter reported it appeared that two people ran into a home in the area. A perimeter was set up in the neighborhood and the house was surrounded.

Police searched for about an hour and didn't find who they were looking for.

My gosh people... gun control and Iraq? That is your answer?! I personally carry a holstered firearm outside around my house as a visual deterrent to the "thugs" in my neighborhood (yes, that is legal) and will continue to do so! Which place would you rather cause problems in, a neighborhood where you know guns are banned, or one where there is some crazy guy that walks around his house with one? And this whole Iraq idea.. that would last a week before they all went AWOL and joined up with the opium addicted terrorists! Talk about a great recruitment program! The terrorists would stop sending threats and start sending hallmark cards "thanks for the new recruits... they are a bit slow, but they sure are enthusiastic!" How about neighborhoods start taking respoisibility for their own safety. how about families start taking care of themselves and stop relying on society and the government to provide for their needs! GROW UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LIFE!

I know a number of folks from NO who are hard workers and great people. I also know some young ones who won't work even though they get jobs for a few days at a time. I see kids all around town who are working on construction sites and working hard all day, but then there are the ones who hang around all night and cause trouble. The working kids are asleep in their beds to be ready for the next day of work. Some of the thugs are making their own decision about taking from others and then complaining that the "man" is keeping them down. Hard work is hard and these guys are sissies, living off their girl friends or mothers. You can make it if you want to.

OC, you know as well as I do that when someone says "we should draft criminals", it means that the bright idea guy has never been in the military themselves. I wouldn't have wanted to serve next to a piece of trash like that anyway. Keep up the good work, it's a tough job.

Why is it the stadium is always listed as a bad thing when a shooting happens in Omaha. Whar is wrong with progress?? And then more police presence is suggested - why not more parental presence? TWO parent households DO create more accountability for the kids.

Carol, it looks like the mayor does care. The police were there. They had the neighborhood surrounded and the helicoptor withnessed two people running into a house and the house was surrounded. I would say the police presence was pretty good.

KC and Dodie- Do you really want to give these thugs military training? What happens if it doesn't change their behavior? Then you have a bunch of "trained" killers coming back to our streets.

Posted by: jp on May 11, 2008 at 02:05 PM
Fake name, you're absolutely right. Cops can't be at all places all the time. Most Police work is done by eye witness. People say they are afraid to step up and help but then they say they're afraid to step outside. Grow up Omaha, if you want these thugs or whatever you call them off the street then the community needs to step up and fight side by side with the police. Helping them out as much as possible. I see nothing, hear nothing is a load of dog dodoo. Some people say that its "their" neighborhood, then take it back from these criminals. I guarantee that if I was a thug and knew that everytime I was in a certain neighborhood the cops would get called, I probably would'nt hang out there. HMMMMMM

I say send in the national gaurd and let them clean up the areas. How can we give freedom to Iraq when we can not even provide "good people" freedom in their own communities? Another question; Why are the elected represenatives of these areas always silent when this type of thing happens? Where is the leadership? Does anyone expect anything of the elected officials anymore? The people of the area should really put the elected officials on the spot and the NEWS media should help by always going to the officials of comment.

just another day in north o!

Way to go North Omaha! Protect the criminals AGAIN! Then complain the police aren't doing anything. Give me a break!

just a thought...if parents aren't teaching moral education/social standards, etc, who is?? I'd suggest that teachers teach it, but so many parents would sue the teachers for not teaching THEIR values. It's sooo sad that OPD had to lock down an entire neighborhood...wake up Omaha...start taking control of your kids, and your lives...

Posted by: Schulz on May 10, 2008 at 10:14 PM
What the heck is it, do a bunch of Sgt. Schulzes live up there? Whenever they ask for witnesses - vee see notink, vee hear notink...

Posted by: kc on May 10, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Dodie You are 100% right! I think Iraq is the best place for them. Possibly they can give the good men and women there a break and a chance to return to their families. Draft them all!

Our priorities as a society are messed up.

Posted by: Pete on May 10, 2008 at 06:53 PM
For dodie: Now there is a leap, from the stadium to handgun control and kids.

Posted by: ksa on May 10, 2008 at 05:30 PM
handguns are as inanimate as your automobile. It's the parents, the society, & the kids. No moral or social education. Blame everything on everyone else and when your done with that then blame it on the handgun ... you want control on handguns ... your best effort is getting control on the values these thugs didn't get because mom & dad were too busy shootin dope.

You people whine about the police not getting the bad guys, yet they have to lock down an entire neighborhood and still can't get any answers. My tax dollars going down the drain....

Posted by: carol on May 10, 2008 at 01:03 PM
It took me a long time to get out of that neighborhood but I am so glad that I did. I use to live on the corner of 36th and Grand Ave. My sister use to live on 34th and Grand and we both got out of there. She in the last 3 years. Right after we moved the kid across the street was shot and killed on his front porch in a mistaken identity shooting. I thank God everyday that I do not live in that area anymore. If the mayor really cares about what is going on in Omaha that is the first place he should be looking at for increased police presence. There are a lot of good people that live on that street but I know there are a lot of gang members and drug houses on that street too.

Posted by: dodie on May 10, 2008 at 10:55 AM
it is so sad the working people can't get a night's sleep to go to work in the a.m.. It's a shame that these hoodlums can stay up all night and have a shootout possibly wounding innocent people, take in regards no one but them, how inconsiderate. I think all these irresponsible shooters need to be drafted to IRAQ where that is the mission TO KILL. I am a home owner also tax payer . THINGS HAVE TO CHANGE AND SOON. What happened to CETA jobs . forget the stadium we need some control on handguns and these kids.
