A homecoming a year in the making for dozens of heartland families unfolded Friday.

Family and friends were on hand in Lincoln to greet members of the National Guard's Omaha-based 600th Transportation Company. The unit was deployed last May.

They trained at Fort Bragg for a few months before shipping out to Iraq.

Approximately 50 members of the unit remain in Iraq.

Thank you for your service, and I'm thankful that you all came back safely. Thank you, husband and wives, who had to deal with things while your beloved spouses were away. Thank you, extended families, who helped out (that is SO RARE these days).
