An Omaha city attorney charged a former Roman Catholic priest Tuesday with one count of indecent exposure and one count of lewd conduct.
Daniel Herek, who already served time for molesting a 14-year-old boy, faces up to six months in jail.
According to the city prosecutor, Herek will appear in court on at least two charges -- lewd conduct and indecent exposure.
A witness told police she stepped out of her vehicle in the Crossroads Mall parking lot and witnessed Herek standing between two cars, masturbating.
The woman said she hesitated about reporting what happened until she visited the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry Web site and recognized Herek's picture and car.
Police say the woman also identified Herek in a photo lineup.
Herek received a criminal citation after being questioned by Omaha police about events the events in the Crossroads Mall parking lot.
Herek registered as a sex offender this time last year.
After 20-plus years of priesthood, Herek was convicted and sent to prison in 1998 of molesting an altar boy and manufacturing child pornography.
He spent two and a half years in prison and finished treatment at the Lincoln Regional Center before being released in 2004.
In 2000, a jury awarded a total of $800,000 to the former altar boy and his mother.
The Omaha Archdiocese said it also settled six other lawsuits for undisclosed amounts related to the sexual abuse of other former altar boys by Herek.
