Monday marks the one-year anniversary of flooding that devastated Missouri Valley, Iowa. Torrential rain and a break in the Willow Creek levee spelled disaster for the east end of town.
After the water subsided more than a week later, Willow Park neighborhood residents started picking up the pieces and getting their lives back in order.
Gary Rodewald came home to find a big mess to clean up and a small mystery to solve. A concrete angel was discovered laying face up in the debris. "She floated in from somewhere."
A year later, "It's beginning to look like a neighborhood," says Missouri Valley City Administrator Rita Miller, who was there for the flood and the recovery.
"We're doing well. I'm not going to tell you everything's back to normal because it's not and it's not going to be for awhile. We've done a lot of dike repair work and we hope that what we're doing is going to keep us from being in the same situation again."
With the weather getting better, Scott Hochstein is looking forward to getting back into his home. It's been a long year in temporary quarters, but he loves the Willow Park neighborhood so he's rebuilding.
"We thought about getting up and moving to high ground, but just decided this is where we picked so we're going to stick it out here."
Scott built a new footing and his home will not only be higher than the floodplain, it will be about twice as large. "Llittle sign of progress, little bit of hope."
Around the corner at the Rodewald home, things look about as they did before the flood, with one addition. "We never did figure out where it came from," says Gary, referring to the concrete angel.
Miller tells Channel 6 News that a total of seven homes were demolished after the flood. Three of those homes are being rebuilt.
