Westside High School administrators say security will be increased for Saturday night’s prom following this week’s incidents of threats and vandalism.

All students must have their school ID to get in and searches will be conducted. Students attending from other schools were required to fill out paperwork in advance.

A threatening message was discovered scrawled inside a boy's restroom on Monday. The next day, the windows of 14 vehicles belonging to students were shot out.

Because of the threat, 70 percent of students skipped classes on Friday despite a visible police presence and increased security measures taken inside and outside of school.

The sad thing is that most of you are adults...perhaps you need to grow up and find something better to do than get on a website and bash teenagers.

I think its great that they didnt post what the threating message in the restroom was. We dont need to have all the slimy details advertised. When the news does put out all the details, it is just giving people more ideas on how to get away with all these ugly acts in our community. Less is more when it come to terroristic situations like these and communicating them to the public.

Ahhh.... OPD protecting the rich and famous and spitting on the poor and unknown. Perhaps the OPD badge should have the cow (buffalo) removed and a $ put in its place. "To Serve and Protect the Wealthy"

While I am all for erring on the side of safety, too many times these threats that seem silly turn out to be true, I think it's ridiculous that parents felt their children were safer at Prom then at school. It is a scary world we live in, but come on parents, if you didn't think the school was safe, what made you think a school sponsored event would be? (Not to mention all of the party's that many of those children chose to attend.)

Oh, I'm sure the kids were cowering in their beds when they skipped class. Come on...kids that age take any excuse to skip. They should be disciplined regardless.

You all act like Westside asked for this publicity--hardly. The media is OBSESSED with this and needs to let it go!

I hope everyone is safe at the prom, but part of me really hates District 66 for its elitism.

Of the 70% that missed classes on friday, how many made it to prom?

Posted by: Carrie on Apr 27, 2008 at 12:02 AM
I'm so sick of hearing about this. WHO REALLY CARES??? If it was happening at any other school besides Westside this wouldn't be news. What a great way to get days off of school, too bad it won't work most places.

Why is it that they have not said what the threatening messages said???
