Maria Vargas will stand trial on a child abuse charge in adult court. A judge has rejected a motion to move the case to juvenile court.

Vargas is accused of abandoning her newborn child in a closet.

The 17-year-old was 16 at the time of the incident.

Prosecutors say that she gave birth to a baby girl and put the child in a closet, trying to conceal the birth from her family.

Police say it wasn't until family members noticed blood and took Maria to
Creighton University Medical Center that they learned she had given birth. Police then searched the family home and found the baby in the closet.

Prosecutors say the infant girl had a cut from something being stuffed down her throat but was still alive.

The motion to move the case to juvenile was denied on Friday.
