A proposed pedestrian bridge spanning the Missouri River has formally been put on the table. The design has been unveiled and it's open for public comment.

The federal government will cover most of the $22-million price tag.

The bridge will originate just south of Gallup University on the Omaha side and come out near Playland Park in Council Bluffs.

Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan says, "The curvature and the swirl really sets if off differently than just a straight bridge or something that's not unique. Mike (Fahey) brought it up. It's an icon; like the arch of St. Louis."

Construction of the bridge will begin next fall.
