A man who lives in one of Omaha's most expensive mansions is accused of cheating on his car taxes. An arrest warrant was issued for Thomas Hilt and he surrendered Tuesday afternoon.

The warrant accuses him of titling and licensing five vehicles in South Dakota, thereby avoiding Nebraska taxes. Hilt lives in Regency, in the former Witherspoon mansion.

Any passenger car or truck kept in Nebraska more than 30 days must be licensed and registered in Nebraska.

One of the vehicles cited in the warrant is in plain view at one of Hilt's properties on 96th and Dodge. The pickup has South Dakota plates and a state revenue investigator alleges that Hilt willfully titled and registered it to his truck line with a Vermillion post office box.

Last fall Hilt told us he's doing nothing illegal and has several vehicles registered in Nebraska.

Besides his trucking interests, Hilt has a Christian music ministry.

He has repeatedly asked the county to lower the valuation on his mansion by more than $1 million saying its condition inside is worse than it appears from the outside.

The property is currently assessed for tax purposes at $2,668,900.00 (Source: Douglas County Assessor) and it is currently listed for sale at $2,480,000.00 (Source: CBS Home Realty).

Thomas Hilt turned himself in late Tuesday afternoon.

The Douglas County Sheriff says Hilt was booked and released on his own recognizance by order of Judge Joe Caniglia.

Calls to Hilt's office and his attorney have not been returned.
