The family of one of Omaha's most recent murder victims took to the street for a vigil Thursday afternoon as police tried to figure out what led to the death of 25-year-old Danny Harris.

While a grieving family waits for an arrest, they are calling for an end to a string of deadly shootings.

Danny Harris was the 14th person to be murdered this year in Omaha. He died after being shot and crashing his car into a building at 30th and Spencer early Wednesday morning.

A display of flowers now marks the corner where Danny Harris was found shot. It's the same spot where his sister, Toni Simpson, led a prayer service Thursday evening.

"We're going to miss him very much," Toni said. "We just wish all this violence stops and people learn from this as we see our sad faces."

Nearby, Harris's voice echoes through a parking lot where a cousin's car stereo plays a rap song recorded by Harris titled, Stop the Violence.

It's a straightforward message from someone Ms. Simpson says had experienced violence first-hand.

Channel 6 recently talked with Harris who was angered by the murder of a close friend.

Simpson says he was trying to change his lifestyle before something similar happened to him. At 25, Harris had a lengthy arrest record for mostly non-violent crimes.

Simpson says at one time she was afraid to have her brother around her home because of his affiliation with gang members but that, she says, was the Harris of the past.

His girlfriend, Mandy Syslo says, "I was still trying to get him away from it but now it's too late."
