Nebraska and Iowa are among states with laws to help keep track of potentially dangerous sex offenders but you're the one who has to take the initiative to track down that information.

High risk offenders have to register and you can keep tabs on them with a couple of clicks of your mouse.

We did a simple search and found 204 high risk registered sex offenders living in Omaha.

When we broke it down by zip code we found that the 68111 code has the most registered sex offenders with 48 but we found at least one registered sex offender in nearly every zip code in the city.

One viewer near 45th and Hamilton Street called us, concerned about his neighborhood.

Aimee Folker and her husband are still unpacking boxes at their new home. It's their first house and Amiee says she thought it was perfect for them. That was before she knew that two registered sex offenders live nearby and one of them is right out her back door.

"It's definitely a concern," Aimee says. "It wasn't even something that we thought of so. We probably should of thought of it."

Sherry Polito has lived in the neighborhood for years and she didn't know either.

"No, I did not," she told us. "I was not aware of that."

Sherry says that with all the kids in the area she wishes someone would have said something before.

"It shocked me," Sherry said. "It appalls me. I think the city, someone should let us know."

Of all the neighbors we talked to, not a single one knew that two registered sex offenders live in their neighborhood. Both of them live close to an elementary school.

Todd Landry of the Child Saving Institute says a key to safeguarding your kids is communication.

Landry says, "Just because someone is listed doesn't mean you need to panic and your child is in imminent danger of being abused. On the other hand the converse is also true. Just because there is no one listed, doesn't mean your child is safe."

Aimee Folker says she still feels safe in her new neighborhood but she's glad she now knows about her neighbors.

"I guess everybody deserves a second chance, but it's definitely disconcerting," she says.

We also looked up the registered sex offenders who live in Council Bluffs. We found 156 names but unlike Nebraska, Iowa lists all of its sex offenders, not just the high risk, level-three offenders.
