Nebraska state senators' pay would double to 24 thousand dollars a year under a measure that advanced from the first round Thursday.
If passed, voters would have to approve the increase in 2006.
The proposal advanced on a 31 to nine vote. It must clear two more rounds before it would be put on the ballot.
Senators speaking in support say they are overdue for a pay raise. The last increase was approved in 1988.
But Lincoln Senator Dave Landis says a doubling of the salary is too much to ask. He says voters would more likely approve a raise to 16-thousand dollars.
Fellow Lincoln Senator Chris Beutler thinks the raise is too low. He says he would support as much as 48-thousand dollars a year.
The measure's introducer Senator DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln says she believes there is support for the proposed raise.
