Snow Day Watch Is On

A lot of eyes will be watching the skies Wednesday night and Thursday morning, checking to see if enough snow falls to close schools.

OPS has been monitoring the weather all day as well as parents who might have to change gears if their children don't go to school Thursday.

Marte Smith keeps close watch of her clients’ nails and what's happening outside her Omaha salon Anything Goes For Hair.

"My husband thinks I’m nuts because I'm like, turn on the news we gotta see what's going on with the weather, especially if you have kids because I like to plan the day or the next day."

Smith isn't alone. Parents across the metro always want to know and that's why Omaha Public Schools continually monitor the current conditions. They'll even send out staff to check the local roads if needed.

If winter weather strikes, administrators like to call off school the night before a new school day. “Many of them do have child care issues and if they can have a little bit of notice it's helpful,” says Luanne Nelson of OPS. “If we haven't had enough snowfall we might have to wait 'til the morning."

OPS says calling off a school day depends on two things. The amount of snow that falls and the temperature. If windchills plummet to 20-below, there's a chance kids won't have to brave the chilly air to get to class.

"I hate the snow and the sloppiness of it," says Smith. But she doesn't fear it as much as she used too.

“As a working mom it sometimes used to be hard because especially working in the salon, I would have to cancel out my day and make sure I make arrangements. Now my kids are older so it's a little easier for me, I don't have to worry about it quite as much."

So far school is still on for Thursday in Omaha.

If students miss several days due to weather, the school year would probably not go longer. OPS would usually just tack on more time to each school day instead. That's because a school year in Omaha runs on hours, not days.
