A well known former Husker football player is scratching his head after learning that someone is allegedly pretending to be him.
Larry Jacobson is a Husker legend. He was on the 1971 national championship team and he went on to win the Outland Trophy as the top defensive lineman in the nation.
Thirty-three years later, it's not uncommon to hear his name come up but this past summer, when his name surfaced in the west coast media, it was a surprise.
He was mentioned as the father of the Seattle Mariners' rising star Bucky Jacobsen.
The former Husker tells us, "It was like it was my son!"
But he isn't.
The former Husker Jacobson lives in South Bend, Nebraska. The baseball player's father lives in Oregon.
The confusion about which Jacobson is which might not be a mistake.
We talked with a former business associate of the Larry Jacobsen (that's Jacobsen with an "e") who is the father of the baseball player. That business associate, Neil Shepherd, says that Larry Jacobsen (with an "e") has personally told him that he's the former Husker.
Shepherd says, "I sat through dinner with him as recent as Thanksgiving when he probably told 10 people about his experience in the NFL; playing for Nebraska."
When Neil Shepherd found out the truth, he contacted the real Husker Larry and the real Husker Larry wonders, "Why would someone do something like that?"
It reminded him of an incident some time ago that is, at the very least, coincidental. A stranger told Jacobson that his son once met him at, of all places, a Seattle Mariner's game.
Jacobson, the Huskers says, "I just kind of laughed at the guy and said there's no way."
The real Husker Larry has no idea why any of this is happening but he says, "You've really made it when somebody wants to impersonate you 30 states from where you're at."
Channel 6 News left messages with the Larry Jacobsen in Oregon, at his office and on his cell phone, but he has not returned the calls.
In the interest of full disclosure we should mention his former business associate we talked with no longer talks with Jacobsen because of a business deal that went bad.
The real Husker Larry says that he has contacted police in Oregon and Lincoln about all of this but he says they've told him that the act of simply pretending to be someone isn't necessarily a crime.
