Beware of someone calling claiming to be with the Social Security Administration and asking for your bank account information. It's probably a scam artist at work.

A caller told Josephine she's entitled to more Social Security benefits, but she needed to reveal her bank account information. That's when the 89-year-old became suspicious and frightened enough to remain anonymous.

"When he got upset with me, then he said, 'you gotta give me that number, you gotta give it to me right now and I have to have it to get this card out to you.'"

Social Security says they collect personal data only if you knowingly give it to them. So if you haven't contacted Social Security for a claim, be cautious.

Josephine was just that. "He said, 'I got to have it right now. I want the name of your bank' and I said, 'no, I'm not going to give it to you.'"

That confidence, helped by a close mother-daughter relationship. “You're kind of acting as the parent to your parent and suggesting they get in touch with their banker or get in touch with authorities that maybe could further check out the story or warn other people," says Josephine's daughter.

Josephine also has a close relationship with her banker who she contacted immediately about the attempted scam so her bank account could be monitored, just in case.

The Social Security Administration warns senior citizens not to give personal information to any caller claiming to be from the government.

What you can do is call 1-800-772-1213. That's the Social Security Administration which can verify if the call is legitimate.
