The man charged with killing two women and sexually assaulting a third is due in court Thursday. Forty-six-year-old Fabian Hands of Omaha faces two counts of criminal homicide and weapons charges. An assault charge has not yet been filed.

Outside the home at 21st and Sahler, it was quiet and peaceful Wednesday, a world very different from what lies behind the screen door a stuffed animal now protects.

What was it like to see the house like this? "It's crazy," says Latasha Brown. There was blood everywhere.

Her mother, 48-year-old Renota Brown, and aunt, 36-year-old Saundra Brown, were found dead in the basement Christmas Eve. For the first time Wednesday, Latasha got a look inside the home.

In a bedroom and under the bed, Latasha says the only surviving victim, a 20-year-old relative, hid and called 911. "It's just outrageous. It's been real difficult because I am used to talking to my mom every single day, every single day.”

The whole scene is overwhelming, but there are some places Latasha just won't go. “Probably, that basement, I am not going down there."

What happened has created more questions for the family than answers. "Why? Why? Nobody did nothing, but try to help him and how he did this to my aunt and my mom.”

One of the victims’ families says they believed the two women may have been shot or stabbed to death, though Omaha Police say the weapon was not a firearm.

Police were called to the residence around 9:30 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived, the front door was open.

Officers entered and the younger woman came out of the bedroom and told them she had been assaulted. As she was describing what happened, Hands came out of the same bedroom and began attacking the woman in front of police.

The officers subdued Hands and a subsequent check of the house led to the gruesome discovery in the basement. Family members said Hands lived in the house and was Saundra Brown's boyfriend.

Neighbors didn't hear a thing. "An investigator came to our house and asked my wife if she heard anything,” said Sewa Mensah.

"Very scared, two died,” says Alberto Montes. “It's incredible because no noise, no nothing."

To lavelle and my Ex Brother-In-Law God help you to endure whatever is happening to you. No matter how heavy your heart or how dark the moment may be. Just keep believing no matter what you know to be true. The darkness will soon fade. I can't find the words to say just how I feel. I would give anything if I could rewrite history. Stay strong!!!! To the Brown family may God bless and I will keep you in my prayers.

Another nasty tragedy, yea. Very sad event, but whats with the PWNing each other in the comment forums? Let's direct that PWNage where it needs to go.

Nichole, or how about you just quit stirring the pot? Don't have anything better to do? Didn't think so. And don't be a hypocrite. Since you want to bring up the "free country" spiel then respect that fact that "2nd Cop" has the right to say what he wants as well and ALSO to remain anonymous if he so chooses! I just love when people don't understand the simple hypocrisy of their statements.

Posted by: Cop on Dec 27, 2007 at 01:13 PM
Mr. Hands I'm sorry your brother has brought this shame to you and your family, but you have no business standing up for him from Chicago. The facts come from the female party that survived and the evidence. Nothing can dispute that. Anonymous- I do appreciate the words of support from many people on these posts, and my comments and criticisms are not meant to them. I am no hick cop. I work for OPD and have attained some rank as I am many years into my career. What you interpret as nasty is just my passion for my chosen career and protecting my brothers and sisters in blue. When they screw up I'll be the first to call them out, but I will defend their actions and try and educate the uninformed that post on these stories. As it has been pointed out, without two cowards who took 12 people with them cause they couldn't even kill themselves right, the number of murders would be down for the year. TT- probably the only reason she lived is because of the officers who came to save her.

Posted by: huh on Dec 27, 2007 at 12:50 PM
where are you getting your facts Omaha has the highest crime rate? I've looked at a few sites and it says Detroit is No. 1, and I've yet to see Omaha even listed

Posted by: Nichole on Dec 27, 2007 at 11:40 AM
2nd Cop -- I'm sorry, are you getting a little angry? Anonymous is free to say whatever he would like and can call anyone a hick; this is America, right? Stop hiding behind fake names and a badge and speak out if you want to.

Posted by: Lavelle Hands on Dec 27, 2007 at 11:21 AM
To: Ms. or Mr. Confused (and it's Mr.Hands) First of all, how can anyone including myself jump to any conclusion without knowing all the facts. You sound like the type of person who say "shoot first and ask questions later" and then wonder if you got it right or wrong, people like you are the worst because you pre-judge. I ask Omaha,NE to be just and fair and wait for all the facts.I do not condone nor do my family what was done at 4213 21st street. If my brother did senselessly, without cause, comitted this horrible act of viloence then he should be punished to the law of the land. Again our prayers go out to the Brown family for their lost. And our prayers go out to our brother Fabian, blood of our blood, flesh of our flesh. WE LOVE YOU ALL AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!!

Posted by: Niecy on Dec 27, 2007 at 09:25 AM
To Lavelle Hands do you not understand what your brother did? He killed two innocent people for no reason. I do not think that these two women could have done something that bad to take their lives. That is ridiculas. I hope he gets the worst that he can. Just because you "SNAP" don't mean you start killing people. He obviously has a problem. You said that your brother is not a rapist he assulted the girl right in front of police do you think they made that up? I highly doubt it! My thoughts and prayers are with the Brown family. My prayers are also with the monster that did this hope he gets whats coming to him!!!

Posted by: mike on Dec 27, 2007 at 09:13 AM
To contribute to the per captia comment. Another problem I would have with this comment is that about a quarter of these murders are happening in a certain area of "Omaha". This is not a racist comment but a simple observation of an area that is having a bigger problem than others. North Omaha needs to get ahold of itself! Also, the city of omaha is no very big compared to the surrounding communities that could all be considered "omaha" but are not in statistical surveys because they are actually different communites like Millard, Papio, Bell., etc.. This town is very safe other than a select area of town that is very easy to avoid.

Posted by: tt on Dec 27, 2007 at 07:51 AM
what was the motive and why did he let the young girl live to tell the story (oh yeah I forgot he was attacking her) hope was'nt no children living in the house because from the look of it this house was very dirty and make sure this man dont get out and R.I.P. to the BROWNS

Posted by: Confused on Dec 26, 2007 at 09:50 PM
Ms Hands, how is it hard not to come to some conclusion when there were two bodies found in the basement of the same home he was found in. I must be misunderstanding your comment, you say that your brother was a good man. I would add this question: How many family members of killers fall back on that little comment? So good people, you know those who respect the lives of others, normally kill people and toss their bodies away as if they were worth nothing to this world? I know nothing of his relationship with the other surviving woman, you may be right. But there were two dead women with him! Does that mean nothing to you? What? Did they kill themselves and he was just keeping their bodies safe? Monsters like him need to be removed from this planet, despite how their family feels about them. Remember that he is the one causing your sorrow, and the sorrow of people who can never speak to their loved ones ever again. Blame your brother, people are justified in their anger.

Strap on a badge Mr. "Anonymous" or dont say anything. I woould watch who you are calling a hick.

Posted by: Lavelle Hands on Dec 26, 2007 at 06:59 PM
For those of you who dont know the whole story, but, yet form a conclusion, i think you are the worst. Please understand that my brother is not a monster not a serial killer nor RAPIST! He did not try to sexually assault anyone, you have been misinformed. The functioning abusive relationship between the two of them is one that most will not understand, i myself do not understand it, but i am a witness to it. For the last couple of days all you've been hearing about is how bad my brother is. He is not a bad person by nature and i believe that he was pushed or threaten to the limit of SNAP!!! p.s. Our condolences and prayers go out to the Brown family and anyone affected by this tragedy. Our prayers also go out to our brother, we love you very much.

Anonymous said~"Lastly, KKAR aired a segment this morning at approx. 0720 hrs. and stated that a recent poll named Omaha as highest murder rate." There is a difference between hard actual numbers and a poll of feeling. KKAR's numbers indicate nothing more that the number of people who FEEL Omaha has the highest murder rate. So much for talk radio emotionalisim.

I send my deepest condolences to the Brown family. That said, I think those claiming Omaha has the highest per capita murder rate are getting that number confused with the most restaurants per capita. Per the FBI Uniform Crime report stats for 2006, http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2006/offenses/standard_links/city_agency.html Omaha had a population of 416,770 and was ranked 46th in murders committed, with 33 murders and manslaughters. Minneapolis on the other hand had a population of 375,302, and was ranked 22nd with 57 murders. I know that the current Omaha and Minneapolis numbers aren’t going to show much change. For those who say Omaha is going down hill, I will give them credit that any murder is alarming. On the other hand, it is not just an Omaha phenomenon, murders happen all over. And Omaha is still a lot better than many other places. Maybe all those commenter supplying bad incorporation or no citations have an ulterior motive, such as being part of the Brady Bunch, who would outlaw citizens the right to qualify, test for and own a registered hand gun. Texas is very liberal with their gun laws, and their cities have better rankings per capita than either Omaha or Minneapolis. They have discovered that an armed society is a polite society, if not a well behaved one.

But let's remember the important thing. Omaha needs a new ball-park downtown. Never mind high crime, the lack of support for the homeless or honest harworking citizens being taxed out of their homes. WE NEED A NEW STADIUM.

Posted by: sara on Dec 26, 2007 at 04:33 PM
Ok, regarding the number of homicides in Omaha, 8 were from the Von Maur tragedy, I'm sure that inflates the number, as does the murder that happened last January (?) where the father killed his family (4 or 5 victims there). That's a 13 person difference. Yes, Omaha has had a lot of murders but it is not the murder capital of America.

Thanks Cop! Nice to see logic and fact over emotion.

Hi Cop: I just got back on this site and couldn't figure out where all the confusion was coming from until I went back and read my posting. Evidently, as I was writing, I omitted the word "one". Omaha HAS seen ONE of the highest murder rates per capita in 2007. This can be attributed to, as I stated, the gang violence, and the Von Maur incident. I have a real issue with your hostility. As I stated before, I have seen you on these postings regularly and do appreciate the input you lend, but have also noticed that people have stood-up for the OPD, and complemented or agreed with even you on plenty of occasions, but you are always very nasty in return. I have to wonder if you are some hick-town cop with a chip on your shoulder, or perhaps one of the few with an anger-management problem that always needs to have the last word, which gives other Officers a bad name. Lastly, KKAR aired a segment this morning at approx. 0720 hrs. and stated that a recent poll named Omaha as highest murder rate

Posted by: t on Dec 26, 2007 at 03:26 PM
Fact: 12 of the 41 murders can be accounted for in two separate mass killings. As horrific as those two mass killings were, they are anomalous -- outside of what we come to expect in our community. All murders are horrific in their own right, but we can expect to have a certain number of homicides each year. Over the past decade, Omaha has averaged approximately 30 homicides each year. Without the two mass killings, Omaha has seen 29 murders so far in 2007 -- right at the average.

I don't shop Omaha any more than necessary because there are too many crimes there ref the 3 Ladies in this incident, NO ONE deserves to be attacked/killed by anyone NO MATTER What part of society they live in!

After searching several more search engines using the words "omaha highest murder rate nation 2007" I come across articles that mention Omaha in the text of the Von Maur shootings, but then they talk about New Orleans and it's extremely high murder rate for the year. Your statements are blatantly false and have absolutely no basis in fact or reality. That is my stance until you can prove differently with a source. There is not way that Omaha has the "highest murder rate in the nation for 2007" or the "highest murder rate per capita of any city". LIES! Prove me wrong and you'll get my retraction.

I worked with Renota and a nicer more caring person you couldnt have known, she never looked for a handout, she took what life gave her and made it so much better.

Posted by: Cop on Dec 26, 2007 at 12:37 PM
To C and Chris: Please cite your source for this report, because I have been searching for the last 1/2 hour and can't find it. There were 33 murders in Omaha last year for per capita rate of 7.9 according to the FBI stats. As of the end of September 2007 there were 26 in Omaha, 3 in October 2007 (opd stats), at least 10 this month, and I don't have the month of November's stats. That is 39 without November. Let's say November was 6, which I'm pretty sure is high. That would be 45 for 2007 and a rate of 10.9 if I use last years population per the FBI. The rate will actually be lower cause the population has increased. Now these stats I'm about to give are all 2006, but I can't believe all these places have dropped below 10 for a per capita rate in 2007. New Orleans- 46.4, Detroit- 47.5, Camden NJ- 40, Gary IN- 48, Baltimore- 43.8, Newark NJ- 37.5, Oakland- 36.4, Kansas City- 25, Atlanta- 22.9. See why I'm skeptical by your statement? Please cite your source so we can continue

Posted by: Ryan on Dec 26, 2007 at 12:15 PM
According to Mark Twain there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. In other words, stats can be used to back almost any position. On the other hand, a quick look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate shows data compiled from FBI stats that suggest there are 45 cities with a higher murder rate than Omaha as of 2006. Omaha may have moved up in the rankings in 2007, but we would still need somewhere around 185 murders to match Detroit's 2006 rate. I think we are sitting right around 40 for the year. Either 45 other cities need to have been incredibly peaceful in the past year, or Omaha needs about 145 more murders this week to become the murder capitol.

To the family of the two victims I am very sorry to hear of your loss. My prayer are with you and the rest of the family. My husband and I know all to well what it's like to loose a love one to a violent crime. I'm thankful that the police have the person in custody and hopefully he will spend the rest of his life in prison. My struggle is that the person who murdered our son is still out on the street and no one has the courage to come forward to say who killed him. I do know that several people saw and know who killed our son. But have not or will not come forward. I just hope and pray that they remember that they have love ones also and if it were their family they would want someone to come forward. My prayer will continue to be with the children of both victims and the rest of the family. Take comfort in the Lord. He will comfort you during your time of loss. We know.

Somebody please cite the "Omaha has the highest murder rate for 2007" story. We have a few days left in 2007, so any claim that Omaha has the highest, lowest, middlest, or any other murder rate for 2007 compared to other cities is immediately suspect.

Mrs. Brown, I am deeply sorry to hear of this tragedy and pray for the whole family. Growing up with Saundra always left a positive impact on me (she, being a couple of years older). She was a joker, a comedian, and always had such a charismatic way to her that made you enjoy being around her. She truly was an awesome person. Neither of these ladies will EVER be forgotten, and I am again very sorry to hear of this news from so far away. With Love, Vaughn

I agree with COP, the only reason all this surfaces as much as it does is Omaha is growing and isnt a "little" town any longer. Even small towns through out this state and others are having problems.

God Bless the family. Unfortunately, there are psychotic people EVERYWHERE, who knows when they are going to flip out. With drugs, guns, and poverty in every community theirs bound to be violence. Nebraska is not the only place that has these issues. We as a community need to pay more attention to our mental health facilities, drug problems, gang problems, and gun problems! WE need to be involved instead of turning our head. In this particular case--I don't know this person or family involved, so I don't know if their were warning signs. BUT I do know that no matter what I believe regarding a persons character, I put nothing past them. I believe everyone is capable of any crime non-violent and violent. YES it may be surprising to me but not unbelievable. In other words, be cautious of everyone who surrounds you no matter what. CAUTIOUS NOT PARANOID.

Dear Cop, thank you, thank you, your so right, Take Kansas City, for example or even Detroit, anyone want to move there, or do you not know what is going on around you in other cities? Know what is going on outside of Omaha before you make such a harsh judgement on just Omaha.

Posted by: C on Dec 26, 2007 at 06:57 AM
To Cop: Although I respect your opinion and you are correct that crime happens everywhere, I must disagree with you on one point. Per a report issued recently, Omaha has the highest murder rate in the nation for 2007. This may be due to dozens of factors (i.e.; city expansion, pop. growth, socio-economics, or a city just now learning how to be proactive against issues that some of the midwest has never had to deal with before). I worked the Gang Unit in L.A. for many years and my ex-husband was a P2 in Hollywood. Although we certainly have our share of crime, we have also been dealing with it a lot longer than Omaha. People here are "paranoid" because they have really never had to deal with some of the situations they are faced with now (i.e.; Hawkins, gang-violence, etc...). From what I have seen of OPD, the awareness and preparedness is awesome, and I personally want to thank you for the insight you lend to these postings and the job you do every day. Be safe, and Happy New Year.

I want to say this to all who may post a snide or negative comment about my cousins. They were both beautiful, fun and caring women. They were a mother, grand mother, sister, daughter, grand daugher, cousin, aunt and friend to many. No they were not on welfare or drug users! It is easy to sit back and judge someone when you don't know anything about them but my cousins were beautiful women who did not desreve this. No one could have seen this coming! Everyone has problems but you never expect that person to turn to violence let alone murder. Neither of them derserved what happened and our family has lost the oldest and the youngest daughter at the same time. This is very unexpected and a big loss to us. It will take time for us to deal with this senseless loss and we are coming together during this tragedy and supporting one another. Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers.

Posted by: Cop on Dec 25, 2007 at 09:17 PM
All you people that bash Omaha every time something happens need to get a clue. Bad things happen most everywhere all the time. Just because some violent crime occurs does not make Omaha a bad place to live. If you live your life in fear about what may happen to you, then you are going to be very paranoid. There are a lot more high crime cities than Omaha. Gang violence is just that, GANG violence. On occasion, truly innocent victims get caught up in it, but most of the time the victims and their past or present lifestyles catch up to them. Many other situations of violence are domestic type issues like this one. So stay away from gangs and don't date abusive psychotic freaks like this guy and Omaha doesn't have to be a bad place to live for you. The actions of gangbanger, Robery Hawkins, or this fool don't define Omaha, and nobody should let it.
