Amtrak Train Derails Near Gretna Save Email Print
None of the 154 on board injured

The lead engine of an eastbound Amtrak train derailed near Gretna Sunday morning. No one was hurt.

The train, with 154 people on board, was heading to Chicago when the engine derailed around 11 a.m. close to the railroad crossing on Melia Road, near the intersection of 234th Street and Highway 6.

"They're fine," said Amtrak's Jack Krueger about the passengers. "They're a little bit irritated that theyv'e been delayed, but we're going to get them on their way as soon as possible."

The train was going slow enough so that the rest of the cars remained on the tracks.

After a delay of about six hours, Amtrak was able to get the train moving again using another engine, so passengers could continue on their way.

I'm sorry that people were left waiting for the train to get into the station---but gratfully they did not have to deal with a dead or injured loved one. Thankfully the train did not go off the track. So count the blessings for the Christmas season. After the holiday you can worry about getting monetary compensation for having to drive to Gretna to pick up your your uninjured daughter. Thank God she is OK. Merry Christmas!!
