Friends and families gathered Monday for the funerals of five victims of last week's shooting rampage at Westroads Mall.

Speaking outside services for 67-year-old Janet Jorgensen, friend Ken Jansen said, "I'm just saddened that a wholesome person like her would be taken."

Her brother-in-law Jeff Jorgensen of Atkinson, Nebraska called the shootings "senseless."

Jorgensen was laid to rest at St. James Catholic Church at 90th and Larimore. Her family shared their memories of her with us on Friday.

"Grandma knew that we loved her,” said grandson Ryan Husk. “We knew that she loved us so that makes it easier knowing that she was happy and we were happy with her."

"Life will never be the same without you Dianne, it never will." Diane Trent's sisters and brother can only imagine what the rest of her life would have been like had she not been at work last Wednesday.

"To lose a loved one is always hard, but to lose a loved one in such a violent, senseless way is particularly painful," said the Rev. Harry Buse.

Dianne's friends and family gathered at St. Leo Catholic Church in Omaha to celebrate her life that ended so suddenly.

"It is like a whole city engaged in a huge group hug,” said the Rev. Buse. “Embraced you and all the immediate families and took one common heartbeat of love and support."

Trent's family will always remember her caring attitude. "She was just a gentle, warm, friendly, nice, very ,very considerate, always thinking of other people," said sister Kellie Schlect. Dianne was 53.

"This is a long and slow process, but it is a journey that you as a family, and we as a community will make together," said the Rev. Buse.

"I've been through tragedy before and they're all more or less alike, you hurt and there's nothing you can do about it.” Inez Joy spoke to us last week about the death of her 56-year-old son. Gary Joy's funeral took place Monday afternoon at Kremer Funeral Home in Benson.

Several white hearses lined the circular drive outside St. John's Church at Creighton University before the funeral for 65-year-old John McDonald of Council Bluffs.

Gary Scharf's funeral was held in his hometown of Curtis, Nebraska. Scharf was 48.

Many of the families asked for the opportunity to grieve in private. Channel 6 News respected their wishes.

Funerals are scheduled Tuesday for the other three shooting victims.

Forty-seven-year-old Beverly Flynn will be remembered during a service at 11 a.m. at Glad Tidings Church. Visitation is Monday night at the same location from 5-7 p.m.

A wake for 36-year-old Angie Schuster will start at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Bellarmine Catholic Church. Her funeral will be held Tuesday at the church beginning at 10 a.m.

Services for 24-year-old Maggie Webb will take place at 10 a.m. at Christ The King Church in Moline, Illinois.

Thank you and the station for your professional coverage at a bad time in the friends and families time of sorrow. After a little time, the family will talk, but this is not the time. Thanks for the space.

As a former resident of Omaha, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of these victims. May you find comfort in knowing that they are with the Lord, and will suffer no more.

Jesus over turned the money-changer's tables in the temple at Jerusalem. He drove those various nefarious irreligious folk out? He simply stated- "My father's house shall be a house of prayer." That is what should happen to those so-called protesters at funerals. There is a time & place for protesting; but NOT AT Funerals! To say they are out-of-place is an understatement. Those protesters show a very deep amount of ignorance on their part. America has had a tradition of burying our dead in PEACE! Improper protesting grieves & SCARS those who are ALREADY grieving. It has got to Stop! Put your foot down & DRIVE those so-called christians out of the `temple of dignified final resting arrangements. Was it not enough that an unholy lot protested at Christ's crucifixion? Still, grieve not the Holy Spirit. We all bear some of the responsibility to prevent such protesting. God knows our weaknesses. Be strong & try to help those weak in temptation. Repent! Choose life. God's will be done.

    rest in peace...

I have witnessed so much compassion and kindness from our community these past few days. How unfortunate that the people from that "Church" in Kansas felt the need to be present at a funeral for one of the victims. The Jesus I know and the God I believe in would never send a shooter anywhere. Why these people feel the need to spread their hatred among people who are grieving is beyond my comprehension--behavior that compares to the shooter, only without a gun.

I didn't know any of the victims -- but is it wrong to feel some sort of attachment to these poor souls? I sort of do, mostly because of the manner in which their lives tragically ended. Especially that lovely 24-year old girl. May they all rest in eternal peace...
