Mayor Stands Ground on Baseball Committee Save Email Print
New additions rejected

A | A | A

The latest attempt to add a new voice to the committee examining the future of a baseball venue in Omaha has fallen short.

The panel is looking into options ranging from renovating Rosenblatt Stadium to opting for a new ballpark.

Councilmen Garry Gernandt, Jim Suttle and Franklin Thompson advanced the names of former Omaha Mayor P.J. Morgan and that of Richard Brown, Vice President of US Trucking, as possible additions to the committee.

The effort has been shot down.

Gernandt was notified over the weekend that Mayor Fahey declined to expand the committee.

Not only are our MUD bills going to get hit with a big fee to pay for the new sewer system, OPPD has a new big increase coming to pay for their new power plant, as well as the bills for the next round of big property tax increases that will be due in 2008 from the last property valuation hikes. We don't need a new baseball stadium right now. The city can't afford it. Please keep the priorities straight. We need to pay attention to our infrastructures and battling crime. Not build a new stadium that will get used a few weeks out of the year. If we were flush with cash it would be different. But we are not! The average "Joe" is spending hundreds of more dollars a month in fixed expenses than they were a few years ago. This has got to stop. The City "stewards of our money" need to do a better job in prioritizing.

This city is starting to sound more and more like Stalinist Russia every time Fahey opens his mouth...

Posted by: KJ on Dec 4, 2007 at 12:22 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong here.. Is there not a future increase on our MUD bills to improve the underground sewer and water lines? This can be a substantial amount of money each Omaha individual will be forced to pay every month for many years. Forget the ballpark Fahey! Consider helping the overtaxed people in this city instead of adding to the burden of unnecessary future taxes. Wake up!

Thanks Larry for the one voice of reason in here. Adding people now does not make sense. I guess everyone else wants to spend $65M to "fix" Rosenblatt for a five year deal instead of $115M for a nice new ballpark and a 20 year deal. Rosenblatt had its day but its time to look towards the future. Can't anyone else see that the NCAA wants hotels and restaurants within walking distance of the event? Spend that $65M on Rosenblatt and you still don't have that. I wish people around here would look at this with an open mind instead of just thinking about taxes and throwing a fit.

He is the 2nd coming of Hal Daub. His wants, his dreams at the price of taxpayers.Their is nothing wrong with the Blatt. People will still go to the blatt. A new stadium to be used for 2 weeks a year is a joke. Sure, Creighton may play a few games there but what else.

Here is how I see it. Fahey was going to try to push this in under the radar. Now that people have caught on to the cost and the possible loss of Rosenblatt, Mikey is starting to slightly back track. Fahey will "listen" to citizens and drag this out until the CWS gets tired and moves. When this happens, Mikey will throw a tantrum and blame this whole thing on the "publics unwillingness to cooperate". I can totally see him letting the CWS move if he does not get his stadium just to spite the ones who stood up against this issue. I know one thing all of us would like to see Fahey's name on....A RESIGNATION!!

It's unfortunate that an elected official has such a total disregard for the people he supposedly represents. This entire sham is another "Fahey Folly"! Add it to skyrocketing crime and outrageous pensions and it equals somebody who has repeatedly failed the City of Omaha. Mayor Fahey wants to build a legacy he can look back on from his lake home in Missouri when he leaves (or is voted out)!

Adding new people to the committee at this point would be counter productive. There is already broad, adequate representation that have been meeting for long period time. Let them make their recommendation. Adding more people to a committee at the last minute only adds confusion.

If Fahey spent his own money as easy as he spends the taxpayers he would be broke. Wait, he is breaking the city.

I can actually picture the Mayor with his hands over his ears, singing, "La, la, la, I can't hear you!" the way my child does. I regret that I ever voted for the man.

Nothing is going to stop this from happening. It's a done deal ... always was. And all the big talk from 5 members of the City Council about not voting for a restaurant tax is a laugh. When the big boys give their arm a twist they'll fold like a card table chair. I've already been trying out the Belvue eateries.

surprise, surprise, surprise. Fahey is as transparent as they come.

Posted by: mike on Dec 3, 2007 at 03:12 PM
mike is a idiot I never voted him in and it sues seems its his way or no way so please people of omaha dont vote him to any office hes just like bush

Posted by: Bill on Dec 3, 2007 at 03:12 PM
Mayor Fahey has a one track mind when it comes to Rosenblatt. Don't let him buffalo you. He wants to build a legacy for himself. He is one not to be trusred.

Posted by: W on Dec 3, 2007 at 03:03 PM
Fahey wants to insure that his name goes on the new stadium.

Posted by: B on Dec 3, 2007 at 02:13 PM
I could've told you that would happen. If it's not Mikey's idea, he doesn't want to do it. It's Mikey's way or the highway. Please don't give this idiot another term in office - ANY office, for that matter.

When you they learn the mayor does not want anyone whose opinion differs from his to serve on the committee.
