It's been the talk for quite awhile, so the firing of Bill Callahan as Nebraska football coach was not a great surprise. Most fans we talked to believe it was the right call.

"I said if we have a losing season, I don't think there is any way this will work," said Interim Athletic Director Tom Osborne Saturday morning.

While fans filled the Qwest Center for Nebraska-Creighton basketball, the talk was football. "I thought Osborne did an excellent job of laying out what the criteria were."

"I think it was expected after a 5-7 season, two losing seasons in four years, I’m not surprised."

"That's what we all want are benchmarks of improvement and improvement wasn't made and I think the coach sees that, too."

"I think it's a good overall decision for the program, kind of heading downhill, had a lot of big losses."

We certainly don't need a professional survey poll to get people talking about Nebraska football and one consensus is where the changes need to be made.

"We used to be a team people hated to play because they felt it for two or three weeks," said Osborne.

"We used to hit people in the mouth and play smash mouth football, we kind of lost that a little bit."

"Probably the defensive plays didn't seem to make a lot of improvements.”

"I think the defense after the USC game just started to give up a little bit, they didn't have the heart like they did."

"We didn't play Nebraska football, we didn't hurt anybody out there, we tried to finesse people and it didn't work."

Nebraska gave up 40 or more points five times this year, including a team record 76 to Kansas. Now Callahan is out and the search begins. And fans had plenty to say about that, too.

"Somebody that knows football, somebody that has a good work ethic, somebody that can motivate," said Osborne.

"Somebody to put the enthusiasm back into the kids."

"Somebody who can bring some intensity back, get the put the fire back in the fans, the Blackshirts. We lost some of the intensity, basically we want someone who will win, that's the main thing."

That remains to be seen. Osborne said there is no timetable for naming a replacement for Callahan and it's not necessary that person have Nebraska ties.

I can't believe Osborne said "We lacked integrity". I mean seriously, him, the coach that set the standard of letting criminals play ball for him. What a JOKE he is. Then to go on and say he hadn't made a decision about the coaches on his way to the Colorado game, but then said he told them in Oct, if you win you have a job, if you lose, you're gone. Then to go on and say the Kansas game was the deciding factor. What a liar, pick a story and stick with it. And what's this crap about NU having the best fans in the country when they voice death threats against the coaches and boo the coaches kids when they are introduced in high school sports. Real classy husker fans, real classy.

Leave Frank where he is, that's not the answer.

JJ, you have obviously never played a down in your life.Smash mouth is not trying to injure but to dominate all fazes of the game. It is about working harder in the weightroom. It is about beating the guy in front of you more than he beats you. It is 3 yards and a cloud of dust.Football is a physical game. It does not teach anyone to be thugs.Football is a way of life. Don't be so dang literal. Why are you reading about sports anyway. Sounds like you should be trying to adopt a kitten or something.Maybe trying to save a rain forest. Let the football fans talk about the football issues at NE and you go back to your knitting circle. Go back to your land of puppies and lollypops and don't ever climb a ladder because you may fall on your head. Way to go Tom. NE ties or not, Ne football will get back to being competetive. It was a good fire and will probably be best for the program.

N, people like you just don't read the quotes in the story, do you? How about you explain to the rest of us then, what Osborne means by this: "We didn't play Nebraska football, we didn't hurt anybody out there, we tried to finesse people and it didn't work". Or how about this nostalgic lament for the 'good old days': "We used to hit people in the mouth and play smash mouth football, we kind of lost that a little bit". Yes, anyone who puts a team on the field should try to win -- but not at the expense of integrity and fair play. Apparently, N, you and T.O. don't subscribe to the theory that the way you play the game is more important than the outcome. I find that disgusting. No amount of merchandising dollars justifies that attitude, and people who are proud of playing that way ought to be locked up. You sound like one of those testosterone-junkies who would berate and beat his kids if they didn't play rough enough to win at any cost. Pathetic.

Perhaps we are teaching our "future citizens" that we do not tolerate losers..3 million dollars to get rid of one is chump change. You get the last laugh Frank.

JJ, people like you just don't get it do you? Who said anything about playing dirty.. You put a team on the field your goal is to TRY to win. The Huskers that I know have never tried to take an opposing player out of the game. Football teaches players alot about life, and being a "thug" isnt one of them! Yes anyone who bleeds Husker Red may or may not "worship" T.O. they do however worship what he stands for. Honesty and Integrity are just two that I think of when T.O.'s name is mentioned.

JJ form Omaha, it is football, not a knitting class.

The next one to go should be Perleman for allowing the extended contracts. He cost the state millions of dollars. What a lousy manager!

Ya know..you people can say what you want about bad decisions and teaching our young kids to be thugs, open your eyes, kids watch regular tv and learn to be thugs. Football is a game of hurt, its a way to take out your frustrations but in a legal way. Incase your wondering, thats why they have helmets and pads. I think Callahan never belonged in Nebraska, there were two people with Franklin's in their eyes and thats all that mattered. The Volleyball team brings more money in now than football and who do we thank for this? The west coast offense...Maybe it should stay on the west coast where that crap belongs. Bring back the SMASH MOUTH football and let people know what its like to be a true Husker....

Posted by: JJ on Nov 24, 2007 at 11:48 PM
So... this is what Osborne wants our kids to learn? That you can't win with "finesse" -- you have to play dirty -- his so-called "smash mouth football" -- and try to injure the other teams' players? What kind of sicko sputum is that? And you fans just WORSHIP this guy? News flash: the football isn't the only piece of over-inflated pigskin on the field at NU. No stupid game is worth teaching young men to be thugs.

Posted by: Paul on Nov 24, 2007 at 07:26 PM
Y'all want Pelini, did you see how his defense sucked against the run against Arkansas? Did anyone notice that it's the same defense he was chased out of NU for? Turner Gill? His team plays high-school-caliber conference teams. Bring in Boise State or Wyoming's head coach.

Posted by: brian on Nov 24, 2007 at 06:59 PM
Chris Tracy: Who recruited this "lackluster team"? That responsibility is also Callahan's and he failed there as well. This was Callahans talent, his defense, his coaches...His firing for not having any of the above worth hoot.

The godfather made Callahan an offer he couldn't refuse !

Old poor lost Frank didn't look so bad after all did he?

I was born, raised and bleed Husker Red,but I believe the idea that the next coach should have Nebraska ties is nuts. There are some very talented coaches out there that can bring us to the land we once were with a ton more experiance than what we have in the " Husker family" Please Tom take your time. We are all behind your decision and can't wait till we are proud again to say. Go Big Red

I am embarrassed to say I live in this state. We have succeeded in teaching our future citizens that you either bribe or buyout anyone no matter how many millions of dollars it cost you. The university, in July, knew the winning percentage wasn't good but they gave raises and extended million dollar contracts for Peterson and Callahan. I didn't see Osborne getting involved with the team to help them go to a bowl. I feel sorry for the players. The so called big red fans have caused nothing but turmoil for this football team.

Posted by: Christopher Tracy on Nov 24, 2007 at 05:26 PM
I think Osborne made a bad decision. The huskers just didn't show any real talent this...there were no star quality players on this squad...no amount of coaching can fix a lackluster team.
