Assault Suspect In Custody

Twenty-two-year-old Krishna Johnigan was arrested at 6:15 p.m. Monday at 6410 Boyd St. without incident. He's being charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder for allegedly setting his girlfriend on fire early Sunday morning.

Omaha Police believed they might have had Johnigan cornered in a home on North 37th Street Monday afternoon but Johnigan was not inside.

The original incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday. Police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at 3951 North 37th Street and found 19-year-old Kennette J. Freeman in a bathtub screaming. There was a strong odor of lighter fluid in the home.

Investigators say that Kennette's hair, face and upper body had been burned. She was listed in critical condition at Saint Elizabeth's Burn Unit in Lincoln on Monday.

Krisnha Q. Johnigan also lives at the same address and he had fled by the time police arrived.

At 1:15 Monday afternoon, a neighbor called police saying Johnigan had gone back inside the house on 37th Street.

Police were not been able to make contact with anyone inside the house but they knocked on doors of nearby homes asking residents to stay inside or evacuate. They closed 37th Street between Spaulding and Paxton Blvd.

By 4:30 Monday afternoon they were able to determine that the house was empty and police left the area, only to make an arrest less than two hours later.

Authorities believe that at some point during an argument on Sunday, Johnigan poured lighter fluid on Freeman and set her on fire.
