A woman has been booked on a child abuse charge after the nearly one-year-old girl she was taking care of was hospitalized with internal head trauma and died late Tuesday.
The child is identified as Cardejah Wynn.
Tennille Goynes was taken into custody.
Cardejah Wynn's grandmother, Kaye Pierce, tells Channel 6 News that Ms. Goynes was thought of as part of the family. She says that Goynes watched all of her grandchildren and there was never a problem until Tuesday.
Police were called to UNMC to investigate a case of suspected child abuse. Cardejah had severe internal head trauma and she died a few hours later.
The child would have been one-year-old on October 19.
Kaye Pierce says, "Sometimes, when something like this happens and you've put your faith in God so much then when you lose a child, sometimes it taints it."
Loutissia Yarbrough watched as Ms. Goynes waited outside the apartment building for the ambulance to arrive.
Yarbrough says, "She was telling somebody, whoever she was on the phone with, 'my baby won't wake up.'"
Goynes initially told police that the child fell off of a bed but after officers interviewed Goynes, they arrested her under the child abuse statue.
Friends of the child's family have set up the Cardejah Wynn fund. People can make a donation at any American National Bank branch.
