Tear Gas Used To End Standoff

A heartland man was arrested Monday morning, after tear gas was fired into a Plattsmouth home.

Acting Police Chief Dave Murdoch says police were notified around 3 a.m. that 55-year-old Edward Toman would not let a woman leave the residence, near 15th Avenue and Smith Avenue. There were concerns about weapons in the house and that shots may have been fired.

Sheriff’s deputies, Nebraska State Patrol troopers, and South Metro SWAT members were dispatched and several blocks in the area were cordoned off.

Police say Toman had a few conversations with 911 dispatchers and occasionally came into the view of officers to show everything was okay. He eventually released the woman, who was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Six canisters were then fired into the house. Toman was taken into custody at 6am and was checked out by Plattsmouth Rescue.

Toman is being held on suspicion of false imprisonment and terroristic threats.
