A warning about bait and switch on the price of a parking lot overlay.

Dr. Lee McNamara said an asphalt contractor came in his Omaha office with an offer to resurface the medical building parking lot.
Dr. McNamara said the contractor told him the job could be done for $1,600. The deal was made with a handshake not in writing.

After overlaying the parking lot the contractor named W. Stanley demanded $16,000.

Dr. McNamara said, “I was shocked.” A nurse in the medical office said the contractor came in with an angry tone. Denell Randall said, “He was like, $1,600 it was supposed to be $16,000 and he followed us back to the lab area where doctor was and he was yelling and screaming about feeding his kids.”

Staff called Omaha police who told them it was a civil matter. Dr. McNamara wrote a check for $10,000 to appease the contractor.
However the doctor stopped payment on the check before it was cashed.

The contractor W. Stanley drove a truck with Maine license plates. He told Six On Your Side it was all a misunderstanding and there was no attempt at deception. Stanley said he had left the Omaha area and wouldn’t hassle the doctor for payment.

Better Business Bureau president Jim Hegarty said this is a typical door to door asphalt pitch seen in the area every year. He warns consumers the overlay may be too thin to last through a Nebraska winter. The B-B-B warns of high pressure sales with prices that change because nothing is put in writing.
