In the hours following the Boston Marathon bombing, cities across the country beefed up security.

In Nebraska, the Lincoln Marathon is less than three weeks away. Monday's attack has police planning ahead.

They're keeping an eye on the calendar, to keep people in Lincoln safe.

It's no small task.

UNL graduation and the Lincoln Marathon are both less than a month away, and both are on police radar.

Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong said with thousands involved in those activities security is always tight.

But, following Monday's bombing, expect to see extra blue.

While LPD won't be doing any immediate special enforcement, police presence will be bumped up for both big events and more to come.

He said they won't risk a copycat.

"If we do have some individuals that chose to do that, we want to wind up trying to make sure that we can protect the citizens the best we can," Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong.

In the height of running competition time, other cities across the country and around the world are planning their upcoming marathons.

Some law enforcement agencies have reached out on social media to enlist the public's help.
