Grease traps aren't in the part of the restaurant that most customers see, and they're just fine with that. Thieves know where to look and they found plenty of targets in Omaha.
Regency Hotel and Convention Center at 72nd & Grover is one of the targets. "It's bizarre," said General Manager Kyle Hovermale.
The suspects are likely using specialized equipment and have inside knowledge on how and where to unload the used cooking oil.
Other locations included the Panda House at 11459 West Center and the Baker's supermarket at 17370 Lakeside. A total of five spots were listed in Omaha Police Department reports.
The victim on every report is listed as Darling Restaurant Services. They have contracts with the locations to remove the grease and value the product at $0.35 per pound.
Darling's local spokesperson could not comment more than to say that they are working with multiple law enforcement agencies in many states about thefts, "this isn't just an Omaha problem".
