A lifetime in Omaha has brought too many burglaries for one man. Jim McGeorge says he’s ready to move and his parting wish is that police catch the latest burglar.
After buying a new business in Butte, Nebraska, Jim is fixing up his home to sell.
"I'm really proud of this wall and the steps,” he told us during a tour of the place. “Me and the Mrs. built this ourselves."
He's lived in Omaha his whole life but the burglaries are driving him to Butte.
Earlier this month surveillance video caught someone outside of McGeorge's home.
"So, he checked my doors on my trailer to make sure they were locked, and they were,” Jim said. “And then he reached in and got my gas can. And then he tried to put gas in his truck but it didn't work right because they are really made for lawn mowers. So he just put it in the back of his truck for later."
McGeorge isn't sure if he is dealing with a first-time burglar or a guy just scouting to come back later.
“I think he was after an inventory. I don't think he was equipped to take it. He was, he was checking out to see, what, if, when he does take it. I think he is coming back."
And that thought is tough to swallow.
"If he takes this I am done. I am out of business. If somebody steals this van I am out of business."
McGeorge says the crook only took his good pocket knife and the gas can this time. He's hoping his surveillance video will help police.
He said, “If we catch this guy it will pay off. It didn't pay off with the guy who stole my tire, but hopefully it will pay off here."
That way he can start his life as a new business owner with his wife in Butte soon.
"She's up there running it,” he said, “and I am here by myself fixing this."
