Variety is one of the keys to a successful workout routine and if you're looking to shake up your moves, here are a couple of twists you can try.
At first glance it looks like swinging a jump rope but one thwack and it's clear that this is serious lifting. Ropes Gone Wild at Prairie Life qualifies as a killer arm workout -- but the real benefit comes from cardio.
Certified Fitness Trainer Luke Wiedemeier says, "It is definitely a way to involve your core more. With running, your core is involved but not to the same extent as when we're truly moving something with our upper body with the lower body stationary. That's what works the hips; the abs; the shoulders, together. That's true core."
When working out with the rope, it doesn't take long to get your heart rate up and that makes sense. One of the ropes weighs 27 pounds -- and that's the light one.
Kettlebells also vary in weight but the intensity is constant. Certified Fitness Trainer Sarah Perrings leads participants through a series of moves with them and whether it's using the kettlebells or the rope, it's crucial to avoid falling into an exercise rut.
Sarah says, "It's getting the most benefit for what their goals are. If someone is looking to lose weight, doing something different every day is going to kinda' shock the system. You're going to get more calorie burn. Your body isn't going to adapt as easily."
Luke mixes it up even more by throwing a few jumping jacks into his rope routine -- a new challenge to keep things interesting and keep himself in shape.
