There a new twist to the flu season this year. Along with the usual threat, the so-called Swine Flu is also part of the health equation.
Shaylee is battling a double ear infection right now. Her mom, Courtney Vaida, doesn't want it to be Swine Flu later.
Courtney says, "She has special needs and her immune system is not quite as, she doesn't fight things off like other kids. So if she does get it, I'm a little bit worried about that."
Shaylee is considered high-risk and Dr. Clancy McNally says because of that she and others will be among the first to get the H1N1 vaccine.
Dr. McNally says, "The kids who are going to be first in line to get it are definitely six months to four-years of age and then kids five-years of age up to 24-years who have a chronic condition that puts them at higher risk, like asthma or diabetes."
While we're all in a holding pattern when it comes to the H1N1 vaccine, Dr. McNally says there's no reason to wait when it comes to the regular flu vaccine. This year, families have three options: the inhaled flu vaccine, the preservative free vaccine and the regular injectable vaccine.
Shaylee will get the seasonal flu vaccine right away and she'll get the H1N1 vaccine when it's available. It's some protection but not enough for Courtney Vaida to let her guard down.
Courtney says, "We're not planning on getting it but we'll definitely watch any symptom: fever; cough; any fatigue."
