The Spin Doctor Is In

Have you ever wondered about the best cardio workout? Our Channel 6 fitness expert, Lori Johnson, says it's no contest -- spinning.

One class burns 500 calories, while the low-impact exercise is easier on your body. Participants will spend 45 minutes to an hour going all out.

Nicole Larson is one of those participants and she says, "I've noticed an increase in stamina; endurance. It helps with every other workout I do. It helps with running, lifting weights -- great toning in legs and just a great calorie-burner and workout."

While it looks like Nicole and others are on a ride to nowhere, don't let the stationary bikes fool you. In spinning, there's a flywheel with tension resistance.

Prairie Life Certified Fitness Trainer and spinning teacher Lori Johnson believes the set-up makes the class right for everyone. Each rider can go at his or her own pace. The more you crank the resistance knob, the harder it gets.

Lori says, "The instructor's motivating. The music is hoppin'. You're working with a group of people and you're just going all-out in a way you might not if you were working on your own."

Monitors let riders know how fast they're going, how many calories they're burning, and the distance covered.

The cardio combination keeps Nicole Larson pedaling.

"I keep coming back because I love the workout," she says. "I push myself and it gives me more motivation to do a better workout."

Lori Johnson says spinning can be modified for everyone from the 16-year-old to the 75-year-old as long as exercisers ease into the class and go at their own pace.
