Many of us will be hitting the gym a little longer over the next month, getting ready to venture out in our bathing suits but how do you know when an injury or illness should keep you from working out? Fitness expert Lori Johnson weighs in.
Sue is learning to lift weights the right way.
She says, "Lifting heavier weights is a little bit better for me. It helps me build up a little more muscle strength. I'm a small framed kind of individual so I need a little bit more muscle mass."
Sue does cardio five days a week but wanted to start building more body strength so she asked Lori to help her mix up her workouts.
Lori encouraged her to start lifting weights but with Sue's already strenuous fitness routine Sue says, "I tend to do some things a little bit more than other people so I have some overuse injuries."
Lori says when it comes to sore muscles or minor injuries, "take some time off -- rest. Ice it, and just be aware of it."
If it doesn't get better in three to five days Lori says then we should consult a doctor. But it's not just injuries that may force us to skip the gym. What about when we feel under the weather?
Lori says, "We call it the neck check. If it's above the neck, sinuses or in your throat, sore throat go ahead and work out."
Below the neck, Lori says, stay home. She also says, "if you're running a fever, take some time off."
Sue says she knows when to stop burning calories simply by listening to her body.
"It's something that kind of comes on gradually. It starts to bother me or I notice it. I'm a little bit more aware of something in my body."
Lori Johnson also says working out when we have sinus problems can provide us more benefits that just burning calories. It can help us loosen up phlegm and open our lungs a little bit.
