Memphis Prevails In 13-9 Slugfest

Omaha and Memphis combined for 26 hits, including six home runs, in a 13-9 Redbird win Wednesday afternoon at Werner Park.

Omaha-Memphis Baseball

Omaha and Memphis combined for 26 hits, including six home runs, in a 13-9 Redbird win Wednesday afternoon at Werner Park.

The Storm Chasers took a 2-0 lead in the second on Max Ramirez’s two-run homer, his seventh of the year. A Jon Jay blast got Memphis on the board in the third.

The Redbirds took a 5-2 lead in the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs. Steven Hill started things by drawing a walk. Jamie Romak singled him to third and Eugenio Velez singled home Hill. Mark Hamilton then launched a three-run home run, knocking Omaha starter Ryan Verdugo (5-2) from the game.

Ramirez led off the home fifth with his second homer of the day to cut the deficit to 5-3.

In the sixth, Nick Derba singled, Jay walked and Ryan Jackson did likewise to load the bases. After Hill was called out on strikes for the second out of the inning, a wild pitch by Sean O'Sullivan allowed Derba to score. Romak then doubled home Jay and Jackson to give Memphis an 8-3 lead.

The Storm Chasers came right back in the home sixth with three runs of their own on a David Lough home run, his fifth of the season, to make it 8-6.

Derba doubled home a run in the seventh and Jay tripled in two more. Jackson’s sacrifice fly plated Jay for a 12-6 Redbird advantage.

Tony Abreu’s seventh homer with a man on in the eighth cut it to 12-8. Pete Kozma and Debra doubled in the ninth to get a run back for Memphis and Wil Myers’ RBI single in the bottom of the ninth finished the scoring.

John Gast (4-1) went six innings for the win.
