Hilliard Dismissed From Nebraska Basketball Program

Nebraska men's basketball coach Tim Miles announced Friday that sophomore Corey Hilliard Jr. has been dismissed from the team.

Nebraska men's basketball coach Tim Miles announced Friday that sophomore Corey Hilliard Jr. has been dismissed from the team.

Hilliard was the first to verbally commit for the 2011-2012 season. He played in nine games for the Huskers last season, totaling nine points and two assists in 51 minutes of action.

No reason was given for the dismissal. Hilliard had two recent encounters with police, which may have been a factor in his dismissal.

Lincoln Police Capt. Jason Stille said Hilliard was one of two men following a woman walking near 14th and Q streets on May 15th. The woman reported the two men were "hitting on her."

Capt. Stille said the woman picked up her pace and Hilliard ran up and took her iPhone, then the two men got into a car and went north from a Wendy's restaurant towards the UNL campus.

The 17-year-old driver and Hilliard were later identified as being the suspects. Capt. Stille said Hilliard was jailed for the felony on June 7th and released on June 13th. The teen was also arrested.

This wasn't the only encounter with police for Hilliard. Sgt. Dave Debelka with the University of Nebraska Police said they were operating a sting operation and Hilliard took a bicycle belonging to the police department on May 21st.

According to Debelka, officers stopped Hilliard after taking their bait bike from near the Student Union Building. Hilliard was cited and released for theft by unlawful taking, a misdemeanor.

Hilliard's next court appearance on the robbery charge is on June 29th. He is scheduled in court for the theft charge on June 25th.
