UCLA Ends Creighton Season 13-5

The Bluejays survived their first elimination game, beating New Mexico 7-2 Sunday afternoon, but dropped the Los Angeles Regional championship game to UCLA 13-5 Sunday night.

The Bluejays survived their first elimination game, beating New Mexico 7-2 Sunday afternoon, but dropped the Los Angeles Regional championship game to UCLA 13-5 Sunday night.

In the first game, Creighton (28-30) jumped on the Lobos in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. With one out, Nick Judkins singled and Chance Ross beat out an infield grounder. Anthony Bemboom then blasted a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence, his second home run of the season and first since March 17th.

The Lobos (37-24) broke through in the top of the fourth inning, using a lead-off double from Ben Woodchick, a passed ball and RBI single from Ryan Padilla to score their first run.

The Bluejays responded and knocked UNM starting pitcher Josh Walker (8-3) out of the game in the home fourth with a two-out rally. Brad McKewon drew a walk and advanced to third on a Judkins double. Ross laced a ball back up the middle, scoring McKewon and Judkins for a 5-1 lead.

Another pair of two-out runs came in the fifth. A Jordan Makovicka single led off the inning, though he was forced at second by Scott Thornburg. Jake Peter walked and Brennan Murphy doubled home both runners.

Erik Mattingly (3-4) went six innings for the win, charged with one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

New Mexico entered the regional with the most hits in the nation (712), fourth in runs (461) and fourth in average (.333), but was held to a total of five hits and three runs in its two tournament losses.
