As a parent of one of the recruited Freshman for the off of my mind. Trev Alberts should be so ashamed of himself for the disgraceful way this all played out. These boys have never even received so much as an apology for their misfortune. I am still very angry that these people hurt my child in this way. It affects all of us as parents, to see our son's go through something so distressful. I'm sure that if any of the people that were responsible for this decision had a son that would be affected by this, things would've been handled a whole lot differently! Where does that leave these young men? Sure, their scholarships were still honored, but only because NCAA says they have to for dropping the sport. What if one of the only motivating factors to go to college in the first place was to play ball? These boys had choices where they could play football, and they chose UNO. My son received numerous phone calls, texts and visits by the UNO coaches, and was already committed to Northwest Missouri State, yet they were able to change his mind to play for the Mavericks. I know that they wouldn't have had such high recruitment tactics had they known what the outcome was going to be. And then to learn of it in the newspaper? Wow, good going guys!! And To the Anonymous that posted...."How about you guys just move on? It's done and over with"?
Unless you have a personal interest ie: a son that was let down by this....we don't want to hear anymore callous idiotic comments!

How about you guys just move on? It's done and over with. If you truly cared about UNO football, you would have been attending their games instead of driving to Lincoln every Saturday for Husker games. Many of you are very hypocritical of things. Also if you cared about UNO basketball, you would have season tickets there instead of at Creighton.

Nothing was stollen here. The school is still honoring the scholarships. That is the only thing of value between the athletes and the school. It sucks that they no longer have the opportunity to play, but look at the big picture...they still get their education paid for and don't have to live up to their end of the agreement. Sounds like a good deal to me.

If Don Steberg's people had any brains, they'd be all over Bruning for trying to help UNL, UNO, and Trev sweep this under the rug. UNO is a taxpayer-funded public institution. It is ridiculous on it's face to suggest that somehow UNO's emails regarding this matter are anything other than public information. Also, Mr. Bruning... UNL has ADMITTED "destroying" emails related to the matter of UNO dropping football and baseball immediately following the Regent's meeting where the decision was finalized. This is in direct violation of state law. It was brought up at the time by the media, but apparently Bruning has no desire to investigate the situation on behalf of the taxpayer. Why not? Who owns John Bruning?

UNO deserves whatever they get from this deal. Tossed all my Mav gear right into the trash when they ended the football program, haven't been to a hockey game since and there is no way I will ever watch stupid soccer.

in all honesty, this could have played out several different ways (not that it excuses this).
It is possible that whoever made the decision was unaware of the impact it would have on the players. Thinking that an announcement in march would give the ones that really cared enough time to go someplace else.
Or its possible that they failed to sign the right players. Getting enough rejections to tip the balance. I am sure that the program was on the chopping block and the decision came because of the players that were or were not signed.

There has always been a competition between UNO and UNL, with UNL being the flagship institution.

I agree with you that I am tired of athletes being "coddled", but the whole U.S. treats athletes as though they are God because they can catch a ball.I don't have an athletic bone in my body, but I like to see young folks try hard and compete the way they will in the business or other world. The bozos in the stands really turn me off.

The Dana situation hinged on the purchase of the institution which was well on the way to completion, but the Higher Education committee would not let the new institution carry the accreditation. As soon as this happened, the Board immediately informed the students and faculty - not weeks later. Representatives of the Higher Education Committee later said they should not have done it, they didn't even know what the consequences of their action would be. No, Dana was different.

Most of the young men who participated in the UNO football program, did so due to the fact that they were not talented enough to play for a Division I team. Colleges exist to educate first & provide athletics second. Anyone with a brain could see that unlike UNL, the UNO football program was a money LOSER. If these kids wanted to focus on playing a game for 3 more years, over getting an education, that speaks VOLUMES about their priorities. As adults, most of us have to eventually stop playing & get on with our lives.

I think this was a total cover up by the university to start with, and I agree with Amy this is a big deal to these kids, if it was known this was going to happen (which I believe it was) these kids and the staffs of the programs should have known sooner. Getting a phone call after you have won the national championship saying your program is no more is pretty classy, or hiring new coaches on your staff knowing they are making a huge change in their lifestyle to leave their current job to come here just to find out a couple months later there is no football program, very classy. For all of you who disagree with me just wait till your precious UNO Hockey team is playing in Lincoln.

Dr. Tom, are you talking about Tom Osbourne? What does he have to do with this situation? He's the AD at UNL.

It is more like jeasously. When did everone ask you to be a spokes person?
