Creighton-South Dakota State Baseball

Creighton fought back from deficits three times to beat South Dakota State 6-5 Sunday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

The Jackrabbits struck first, stringing together three singles in the second inning to push across a run off Bluejay starter Ty Blach.

Creighton responded with a run in the home second. Anthony Bemboom led off with his team-leading 10th double of the season and advanced to third on a ground out by Scott Thornburg. A sacrifice fly to deep center off the bat of Mike Gerber tied the game at 1-1.

The Bluejays (15-17) put up a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Nick Judkins reached safely on an error by SDSU shortstop Eric Cain. Bemboom singled and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Thornburg before Gerber doubled them home.

South Dakota State took a 4-3 lead in the seventh and the Jays immediately tied it in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch by JD Moore with the bases loaded.

SDSU (11-19-1) went ahead 5-4 in the eighth before Creighton rallied again in the bottom of the eighth. Gerber led off with a double and pinch-hitter Michael Mutcheson singled. Mutcheson stole second to put both runners in scoring position and the pair advanced when Jake Peter grounded out to the right side. Another wild pitch, this time by Austin Busse (2-2), allowed Mutcheson to score the winning run.

Kurt Spomer (1-0) got the win in relief.
