Nebraska scored six runs over the fourth and fifth innings and held off a late Iowa rally to capture a 7-4 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes did rally for a 7-6 walk-off win in game two.
Trailing 1-0, NU came to life in the fourth inning of game one. Taylor Edwards walked and Ashley Guile and Tatum Edwards followed with singles to load the bases with none out. Brooke Thomason worked a walk to score Taylor Edwards. After the next two batters were retired, Madison Drake drew a four-pitch walk to force in another run. Nikki Haget then capped the inning by lining the first pitch she saw into center for a two-run single that gave the Huskers a 4-1 lead.
The Huskers added to their lead in the fifth. Taylor Edwards led off with a single, Guile reached on an error that put runners on first and third. Edwards came home on an RBI single from twin sister Tatum to give Nebraska a 5-1 lead. Mattie Fowler then put down a squeeze bunt that scored pinch-runner Jordan Bettiol to make it 6-1.
The Hawkeyes got two runs in the sixth inning before Nebraska added one more in the seventh on a Courtney Breault RBI single to make it 7-3.
Ashley Hagemann (18-12) earned the win in relief, though she was the losing pitcher in game two. Chelsea Lyon (8-12) took the loss.
The Huskers (26-15, 8-3 Big Ten) took a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh of game two, only to see Iowa rally and plate two runs to salvage the split. Nebraska was also its own worst enemy, walking eight batters, hitting two, committing one error and allowing a season-high five stolen bases.
Breault's solo home run gave NU a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Nebraska walked a pair of batters and hit a third to account for three of the Hawkeyes' five base runners.
With the bases loaded and none out, Hagemann walked Brianna Luna to force in the tying run. Melanie Gladden then ripped a single past Gabby Banda at third that scored pinch-runner Sydney Reynolds.
Kayla Massey (8-9) went the distance for Iowa (16-21, 6-5 Big Ten).
