Safe Shoveling

Even if you work out regularly there's something about shoveling snow that can hurt your back if you're not careful. So we got some advice from an expert.

Gib Willitt is a professor of physical therapy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He demonstrated the proper technique for shoveling snow to make sure you don't throw out your back when you're throwing the snow.

"Use your body and legs as much as possible. Take the scoop and then when you go to throw, step into it rather than trying to twist and throw. That's where it puts your back at greatest risk, when you have a load on the shovel and you're twisting and throwing at the same time.”

Also make sure you don't take too much snow in every scoop. The heavier the load the greater the risk of injuring your back.
