Mother Puts on Detective Cap; Police Make Arrest

Mom saves girl

A mother says her detective work saved her teenage daughter from a potential predator. Because of the parents' details, Bellevue Police arrived at the hotel on Saturday where the girl and the man in his twenties were supposed to meet and made an arrest.

Bellevue Police say Kristopher Hilou, 23, had a stolen car and kept giving them fake names when he was taken into custody.

The teen's parents believe he was preying on their daughter when he told her to meet him at the motel.

"I'm not sure what he had planned for her -- but taking her to the unknown and I would have lost her," said the mother. "Maybe for good."

She had an uneasy feeling and decided to hack into her daughter's Facebook account and examine her cellphone photos.

She found a trail of sexual messages and pictures.

"He's preying over young girls," thought the mother.

So the parents went to the Bellevue motel at Highway 75 and Cornhusker and called police. The man eventually showed up.

"This was not a good person for their daughter to be meeting," said Bellevue police captain Chuck Clark. "Of course, parents have to balance trust and privacy issues for their teenager, but they still have to provide that oversight. And in this case, things weren't. She did the right thing in contacting police to help investigate this."

Investigators say Hilou had driven to the metro in a stolen car from Kansas.

For this mother -- a lesson learned for her teenager...and for others to note. "You have to listen to your parents -- the girls especially. Mom and dad are not old and stupid. We have experience and would like to teach it. I think she finally realized that mom was right."

The teenager says she's embarrassed for falling for the long-distance romance and now understands how her parents had her best interests in mind.

The 23-year-old is in the Sarpy County jail on "theft by receiving" and "criminal impersonation" charges. Investigators say he has warrants in other states.
