The Channel 6 Weather Authority has declared a Weather Alert Day as an arctic front has pulled the coldest air of the season into the Channel 6 viewing area, bringing sub-zero wind chills.

Temperatures will drop into the single digits by Monday morning while winds stay blustery, making it feel like -5 to -15 degrees. Anyone heading outside, especially children for school, will need all the appropriate gear and clothing that winter-like conditions require.

Flurries are possible with little to no accumulation expected. Omaha's last measurable snow fell on February 24th, making it 289 days without snow. Lincoln's snow-less streak reached 300 days on Sunday. The last time snow fell in the capital city was February 13th.

Des Moines' streak without snow ended this weekend. By Sunday morning, eight-tenths of an inch had fallen. On Friday, Des Moines broke a record set in 1889 by reaching 278 consecutive days without snow.

The heaviest Midwest storm in two years dumped snow across a broad belt of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities area, as well as parts of South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Up to 15 inches of snow was possible in the Twin Cities by late Sunday night. The slow-moving storm caused mostly minor traffic accidents across much of Minnesota, highway closures in eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota and flight cancellations and delays at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

A blizzard warning was out for much of eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota while a winter storm warning was issued for much of central and eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
