Snowy Owl Captured in Downtown Omaha

A beloved animal not native to our area has been spotted again in the metro. This time, the snowy owl was seen near the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. She was severely malnourished.

A beloved animal not native to our area has been spotted again in the metro. This time, the snowy owl was seen near the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. She was severely malnourished.

The snowy owl is native to the Arctic but last winter they were spotted in Nebraska and Iowa.

Raptor Recovery Nebraska is trying to get the owl healthy again. But it will take time.

"When I picked her up yesterday, she was so weak I didn't have to wear gloves," said Denise Lewis. "I put her on the scale and she's just under two pounds. A fully weighted female should weight five pounds. That's like me losing half my body weight."

The snowy owl is doing much better. She's been getting nutrients from Pedialite for electrolytes. She started eating mouse bits on Tuesday.

She will will go to the main center in Elmwood, Nebraska, on Thursday to continue the recovery.

Another snowy owl is being treated in southeast Nebraska.

It had a run-in with a garbage truck the other day near Avoca and broke its wing.

Snowy owls head south in search of food. Lemmings are their primary food source.
